East Croydon (Not my choice) - Bars etc close to the station?

Dear God, no! I have to go to Croydon occasionally for work and it's a hell-hole. Scummers kicking off on the tram and general dregs of society in their masses! I always drive now to avoid contact with the local population.

It's a quick journey into town so why not go out in London?

Trying to find halfway between London and Brighton...suggestions?

Seems like a faff to me. I'd go for one or the other seeing as East Croydon is one fast stop away from town. Might be a good excuse to make a day/night of it in Brighton?

Depends what you're doing really - there are loads of lovely towns/villages and country pubs out in the sticks but I'm guessing you don't want to drive! Could always B&B it.

If you come out of the station do a right into the town centre just follow the tram tracks, when you get to high street (top of crown hill) turn left "have fun" :)

If you come out of the main exit and head to your right you'll be walking towards the main shopping area. As you cross the main road (where you will also cross the tram lines) you should see a Slug bar opposite (and slightly to the left). Not bad if you want somewhere to go. There is also Tiger Tiger, which will be fine in the week, or the Crown and Pepper.

Please ignore the stabbing comments. It isn't that bad and as someone from Croydon I find comments like that quite insulting.

South Croydon's fine for food etc and is a short walk. If you want a nice meal try Albert's Table. Avoid West Croydon. It's awful.

To be fair Croydon isn't that bad if you know where to go - there are far more scummy surrounding areas and places in town! I used to live in Brighton and they're places there that make Croydon look lovely.

The Glamorgan on Cherry Orchard Road meets the close to the station requirement and seemed decent enough but you are heading away from the town centre (and therefore other pubs) although that may not matter depending on your plans.

Otherwise the Dog and Bull that maccapacca mentioned offers a reasonable selection of ales and food. It is closer to the town centre if you were planning to go to more than one pub.

The Green Dragon also has a fairly good selection of ales or at least it did last time I was in there.

Uuuuugh, it smells like Croydon in here :p

Blue Orchid on a Tuesday night is all you can eat Chinese buffet and Babycham for £3 a bottle. No, wait, that was in 1996 :p

Serious suggestions though, 10 mins for the train to Clapham and there are loads of places there or get the tram (or train) to Wimbledon. Kingston is also just a bit further. OR, there are a couple of nice places to eat in Beckenham if you need to get away from Croydonia. Can't remember how you get to Crystal Palace from there but there are loads of cool places up there.

Probably the easiest/least changes is by getting the 410 bus from East Croydon station and that'll take about 30 minutes. You could get the Overground to Anerley or Penge East then a bus up to Crystal Palace Parade.
