Hi,

Been saving for a house for me and my girlfriend for about 1 year now and I've managed to save nearly all the deposit all by my self!! But my girlfriend hasn't saved anything yet!!

I love her absolute millions but just a little confused has she also really really wants to move out.

What's you thoughts on the situation would you just pay the full deposit or would you make her save up ? hahahaha

Buy the house yourself and take her as a lodger. Easiest way financially. I did this for years with my o/h until we bought together.

If she wants to own it, she needs to make the same commitment you have

Get a solicitors advice, make the difference in input legal. Or, insist on staying where you are until she has matched your savings. To speed this up, blow some of your savings on toys for yourself to lower the bar a bit :-)

my wife saves more than I and our deposit will be paid mostly by her ;)
I saved 1/4th of what she did...but then I buy most food and pay most of the bills ;)

Depends on how much you trust her in terms of a financial and long term relationship. If you pay for the deposit and effectively pay for her, then make sure all the finance is done right in case you break up. It's unfortunate, but it's always a possibility.

Buying a house together ties you two together financially, even more so than a marriage, so you should take precautions. For instance, if she was paying her half, she would expect the paperwork to reflect that. As she's not, the paperwork should reflect that it's all your money going into the house, and that you're the one that paid for (and now owns) it.

If she's rubbish at saving because she's always spending her money elsewhere, then making a financial commitment to you and a long term home/house investment obviously isn't that important to her.

My wife (girlfriend at the time) paid the deposit on our first home - but then I did / do pay more on the mortgage. Maybe she can pay a bigger split of the mortgage payments?

Speak to a solicitor as this won't be an uncommon situation, they can advise what's usually deemed to fair in such as scenario and draw up the necessary paperwork.

Something like - capital gains are shared in proportion to the capital input by each of you and capital losses are split 50/50.

She did say yesterday that she would pay the full mortgage and utilities every month and just use my wage to live on.

This sounds dodgier than a dodgy thing on dodge day.

Everything split 50/50 down the middle, always. It is the only way to make sure no one (and it is looking like you in this scenario) gets shafted.

Relationships end. It's a fact. Don't let love blind common sense. If you buy the property then make sure it's in your name only. You absolutely must protect yourself - so think with your head.

very clever. spend all your money and let her save hers. if you get a divorce she will be sitting on a nice little nest egg ;)

Just put a percentage of each of your wage into a joint account.

It means you are both fairly contributing. I put a bit more into our joint account cos I earn a bit more. We use that account to pay for all house and joint expenses. The remainder stays in our current accounts which we have personal control of.
