Baby monitors

I think that's the biggest problem. There's so much crap manufacturers try and sell you as necessary; and then you've got the +10% effect from having the word 'Baby' in front of it.
None of it is strictly necessary; the majority of parents won't get anything from the more advanced features of baby monitors than simple peace of mind. But for those who *do* have the unfortunate experience of something going awry with baby those features can be life-saving. It's worth attending a baby CPR class even if you're planning on getting a motion sensor, as you'll still need to know what to do should baby stop breathing.

We didn't go for a video monitor, as we thought that would be a bit overkill. There *are* times I wish we had one as he sometimes gets into odd positions (arms and legs stuck through bars usually) and I'd love to see how he gets there!

Hi,

Wireless ip camera as others have said. Handy check on your baby without going in as not to disrupt them, has audio and intercom. Night vision works great, and ideal over wifi or 3g and above.

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00R49X41C/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item

I just got this one and am not happy with it so will send it back to Amazon but wondered if you can comment if yours has the same issue - the camera itself emits a high pitched whine (like coil whine) and makes a constant noise like reading a hard drive. Both noticeable if you're in a silent room but even more so over the audio. Does yours do the same?

Perhaps even more annoying than that are the flashing lights on the front of the camera - one to show it has Wifi (why not solid?!) and the other to show it is not using LAN (even with LAN disabled)! Totally pointless and distracting for a toddler. App also does not have option to send notifications to mobile/email.

Otherwise the picture is pretty good, makes a click when it switches from day to night vision though not really a problem.

Hi,

Yes mine does make a slight wine (white noise almost), but nothing that distracted our son. The lights we just covered up with some insulation tape.

The quality was perfect for us, and really we just wanted the video and audio as indication. Sync etc, isn't really a problem as it's a video monitor not a remote meeting device :-) yes the audio hissing is present, but again as long as I can hear crying over it, it served it's purpose.

From my experience the more **** that comes with it the more obsessed you'll be about it.

* Oh she's stopped breathing
* Oh I can't hear her breathing
* Oh I can't see her, has she fallen out the cot?!

We ditched out fancy one for a simple one, still used it as a way for my daughter to talk to us when she wants to (she's 5 now - it's her intercom lol) The fancy ones frankly are a complete waste of cash, don't know any of my friends who used it, most ended up unplugging the additional stuff. If a baby isn't happy they'll cry - and damn you'll hear them regardless. After a few weeks you'll barely need the monitor anyway as you'll learn the baby's routine anyway, usually very frequently during the night..

I agree with this 100% and i know my wife who is a qualified child care worker would agree also. I know this sounds harsh, but the problem with pressure pads is by the time they alert and the time it's taken to get to react the damage has most likely been done.

With that said, you do what ever you feel is right for you and your partner. If it puts either or both of your minds at ease then it can't be a bad thing. You need all the rest bite you need. If however, neither of you are still not going to relax or it has the opposite effect then it's of little use.

Bringing this back up to the top as I am also looking for one.

Not all singing etc, just one that works, is reliable.

Thank you.

I was thinking of IP camera etc and using iphone / ipads to use it. But I think perhaps a specific baby monitor out the box maybe best?

open to suggestions please.

Well the boss has convinced herself or allowed herself to be convinced that we need a pressure pad monitor, so I guess we'll be getting one of these.

Never used one, unless you live in a huge house and cannot hear from where you sit in the evenings.

Waste of money, paranoia creating machines :D

Surely that depends on if you are a leave them until they are really screaming type of parent or not? We've always preferred to go to our little chap before he gets to the screaming so loud we can hear him downstairs phase so a baby monitor is essential.

Oddly all our friends and family are amazed that he hardly cries at all compared to other babies could the two be linked?!?!?

No, we follow the same approach and our two are both screamers :p Some children are loud, others are not :)

Any models/brands to look out for?

Not really, we just have an ebay generic which seems fine, great IR (whole room visible in pitch black) and has worked for around 2 years now without issue. Came with a wall bracket too.

You know what the best thing about the baby monitor we bought was?

The MUTE button, at least it had a little decibel meter that went up and down; if it spent ages in the red bit then we'd go up otherwise... meh.

Pressure pads and all that other fancy stuff? you don't need it.

IF,,,,,,,
one goes for a IP camera and uses it via a iPhone or iPad etc.

Does the app have to be always open. Just curious, if you have your phone on the table locked. Then the child makes a noise in the bedroom where the IP camera is. Would the phone tell me, do anything ?

not really clued up on these IP Cameras as a baby monitor. That is why I am steering more towards a dedicated unit.

FWIW, he's 3 months this week and we've survived perfectly well without it until now. Just asking as she asked me to investigate weeks ago... :o

Tell her you've investigated them and decided they are a waste of money/placebo.
