I haver resonantly purchased this monitor and set it up last night, however noticed that Freesync wasn't available on AMD radeon settings also not able to push the refresh rate above 60Hz at 1440p, I have only plugged in the HDMI and power cables to the monitor. Does anyone know if I need to plug the other cables in too activate the freesync and increase the refresh rate.

I have a MSI 290x and as far as I was aware this had freesync support.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Agreed, you'll need the display port cable the monitor comes with. I run the same monitor with an MSI 290 4G and the Freesync definitely works with this configuration.

As your card has the same outputs as mine, you'll need to plug the mini display port end into the monitor, and the normal display port end into your GPU. Then just make sure you have GPU drivers that support Freesync and enable Freesync in the Crimson or Catalyst software. Then enable Freesync in the (I think) Image section of the monitor's OSD menu and you're away.

If you want to test it works, you can download and run the AMD Freesync demo here https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/s/2B197749034A48E1B00E4B3B5EDFFC66Y

Also Aa83 do you know what the red rail is that is supposed to be connected to the back of the monitor is for and if I need it?

No you can take the HDMI cable out, the display port cable is all you need.

The red plastic thing goes in the back of the monitor stand, and is designed to be used as a cable tidy for the display port, power cable, and anything else you've got going into the monitor. You have to remove some clear sticky plastic off the back of the stand, which will reveal the hole the cable tidy slots into. Then just push it in and push down to click into place.

Displayport is instead of (and better than in every way) HDMI.

But, if I were you I would not keep that monitor, despite being advertised as 144hz, it is a 35-90hz freesync range, which is one of the pitfalls of Freesync - buyer beware.

There are other freesync monitors that do go up to 144hz.

The MG279Q is a fantastic monitor.

They are all facts though, and if a higher refresh rate and a slightly quicker overall response times is more important to you than the IPS panel then there are other Freesync options which are slightly less expensive.

I personally feel the benefits of IPS outweigh the other shortcomings, and to be honest I only play one game that goes above 90fps @ 1440p. Even for that I believe there is an unofficial bios for the monitor which creates a Freesync range of 54Hz-144Hz:

And the Predator XF270HU is a much better in every regard monitor, if you want Freesync.

£50 more gets you a 144hz Freesync IPS monitor that actually goes to 144hz. It will be the same panel.

And Acer's support cannot possibly be worse than Asus's has been on their RoG monitor line, I'd never touch another Asus monitor after owning the Swift from release day.

I'd be happy to have it pointed out to me while I still had time for a return that my 144hz monitor only went to 90hz and there was a good alternative that went to 144hz for £50 more ;)

Does anyone know if the Acer has something similar to Asus turbo key to change refresh rate? Either that or in the osd
