Ok guys, an odd one this, I have a Dell 29" superwide monitor and for whatever reason, I'm just not getting on with it, so I want to go back to a standard 16:9 screen, so I need some recommendations.

My budget is around £500 and I'm looking for quality rather than features, also, due to on-going health problems (I have a brain tumour that is impacting on my vision), I need something that wont have things like dead/bright pixels as my sight is distracted very easily.

It will be used for surfing, gaming and watching blu-rays and needs to be at most 735mm wide.

It will be driven by a GTX 980 and a 4790k CPU.

What games do you play?

As an all-rounder I'd go for this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/aoc-...creen-led-monitor-silver-black-mo-029-ao.html

1440p, IPS, not too big, solid construction. Can't go wrong. Not too many great Gsync panels at <500 for your needs, I assume you watch quite a bit on it so I wouldn't say 144hz + TN would be worth recommending for your needs.

99.9% FPS Shooters, and £500 isnt the max. I'm willing to spend a bit more for the right monitor, say £600-£700.

In that case, a bit unlucky as this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/dell...reen-led-monitor-midnight-grey-mo-084-de.html was on sale just last week. Still a fantastic buy though.

Your other option would be to get an IPS one, but those start at 650 eg https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer...descreen-led-monitor-black-red-mo-098-ac.html which should arrive in stock by the end of the month afaik. Is the difference worth it? Depends on who you ask, I would say no but I'm a bit peculiar with my tastes.

Whats the difference between those 2 Acers?

The XB271HU is the latest model and supposedly better in terms of how it is assembled with users reporting much better levels of BLB. It was released only a month or so ago so its very new, its the one I would go for out of the three posted by melmac.

There is a long thread on overclockers.net if you want to read up some more. :)

I may just be a one of the few who feels this way but the current "gaming" ips screen are rubish and blurs way to much especially if you are gaming below 80hz/fps(gsync). This is of course only relevant if you are sensitive to blur like i am(does my head in and gives me a headache).

My experiences so fare with the acer xb270HU
Desktop: Horrible blur on windows when dragged and with ULMB enabled revealed clear overshot behind and infront.
BF4: locked to 164fps/hz, gsync and was fine no problem. If fps was any lower blur would become a problem really fast. ULMB again revealed nasty overshot.
Fallout 4: a blurring nightmare hovering around the 70-100 fps mark with gsync, even worse if there was an fps drop.

Gsync: Starting to like gsync a bit more than what i use to. Just one thing they dont tell you about gsync, or freesync for that matter, is while its nice to have at lower framerates to combat tearing and stuttering, those same lower framerate also will give you more blur due to image persistence.

ULMB: Really helps in the blur department but gave me horrible overshot so no thank you. Should note that the overshot problem might just be down to the specific firmware i had on my monitor and might not be an issue on other models with different firmware.

Overall if you are use to IPS blur and slower response times then they might just be perfect for you and the "smoothness" for lack of a better word is a real plus. I personally are done with IPS screens with a gaming tag on (i love IPS in general though).

Thanks for your input, having never used a monitor with G-sync/freesync, I had no idea these sorts of problems exist. Something else to think about....

It's not due to Gsync, it's just the nature of trying to make IPS panels good for gaming, when they aren't really meant for it. In his case the blur makes it a big deal, for 99% of the other users, no one gives a damn.

Sad to hear that IPS still are such a blurry mess!
Have just the other day built me a new shiny gaming comp, and right now I am on lookout for a new monitor :)

Been away from gaming for a year, and then also sold my Rog Swift TN screen (PG278Q)

The absolut worst for me are blur, so IPS are a no way.

And it seems like it's still the Rog Swift and the new Dell that are the very best then, about motion handling ?

I have read about the nightmare that plaqued the Swift and sad to say it seems like the new Dell S2716DG, also have it's problem.

And about G-Sync, I would never ever buy a new monitor without it, it is by far one of the best thing happen in gaming, if you ask me.

I really hope that there are some new TN G-Sync monitors on the way this year.
