Hi folks

The job description for a position I want to apply for says all candidates need to have passed an enhanced DBS, which I understand is a criminal record check. Now I've looked this up online and it says that an individual cannot request this on themselves and it takes up to 8 weeks, so does that mean that if I get offered an interview the prospective employer will arrange this check?

The employer will request it for you, Dependant where you live will mean how long it takes. In the North I sent one off this Monday and it was back Wednesday, the South can take 16 weeks.
When you receive your DBS make sure you sign up to the update service which is £13 a year. It means you never need to pay the DBS charge of £48 again. (or any future employer)

Most jobs do this I wouldn't worry, even if you do have a criminal record, as long as you have stated this in the application. You should be fine.

Mine took 3 months to come (was sitting with metropolitan police and they had/have a backlog of 50,000 applications). If you give the met a call and sweet talk them they will speed it up to just a couple of days (wish I had known this at the beggining).

Also make sure you subscribe to DBS update service so you don't have to do it again ever. Small annual fee involved but it's worth it if your industry requires such checks periodically.

Mine have never taken more than a week, always done once I'm in the role. I have no idea who they deal with though, I've had some pretty high clearances and they're always quick.

Our Met ones took ages too - normal DBS doesn't take long however. Had to do some MOD ones a few years ago, they took a while too.

Thanks everyone for advising on the procedure.

Apart from getting taken home by the British Transport Police for being caught playing near a disused railway line when I was 14 I'm in the clear.

That more than likely wont show, I was worried a caution for being a tad worse for alcohol at 14 would turn up on my enhanced DBS check but nothing there at all. Don't forget to register for the update service within 28 days of your certificate being issued.

I'm pretty sure the enhanced one will show Cautions, Arrests and any police involvement.

A normal shows nothing on me, but a enhanced has some stuff what I was involved in 16-18

Why would you pay anything? If an employer wants to do credit checks, criminal record checks etc.. they can pay.
