Hi all.

i am planning to travel to Peru in 6/7months time and was wondering whats the best and quickest way to go to the amazon rainforest from cusco?

I did some extensive googling and found out so far that i would have to fly back to Lima and then back east again to Puerto Maldonado?

Any direct flights or trains/buses etc that go there?

There are loads of organised trips from Cusco to the Amazon so you won't need to fly or get a bus anywhere. You just need to get to Cusco :)

That does depend on where you want to go though. There are two main places you can go to the Jungle in Peru. Manu and Iquitos. Iquitos trips might leave from a different place (Lima probably)

I went to Manu. We didn't even book it in advance. We just went round a few of the places in Cusco and found an organised tour we liked the look of. Left a day or so later. Might be best to book in advance if you're not that flexible on dates though.

Trip was 5 days in total (plus a day travelling there and a day travelling back - by boat and jeep. Although you could fly out on a little biplane if you were happy to pay extra). We stayed in log cabins with little or no electricity. Spent every day trekking or visiting places of interest (either by walking or by boat). Got to see allsorts of interesting animals and the guides were full of crazy stories of things they had seen and done:D

It was an amazing trip so I would highly recommend going. I can't remember who we went with though. I'll try and find out and post back to you.

quality thanks i will check out Manu .

i already checked out both Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos. But with Iquitos you have to fly via Lima.

Cusco is where we will spend a good chunk in that area for manchu pucha and secret valley. Also going to try and see the sun of gates festival i think its called which is on teh 24th June in Cusco

Cusco is really nice, I spent a few days in the city before moving to a town down the road for a few weeks and its so nice just to relax there.

My boss is out there at the moment for 3 weeks. He seemed to have a lot of stuff planned so I'm sure it will be plenty of time.

i am tossing and turning between going to either the amazons or lake titicaca.

Because of the huge traveling times between places, its difficult to fit lima, Cusco(machu pichu, secret vally), lake titicaca and the amazon rainforest in 3 weeks!

I did all of that in 3 weeks and a bit more in 2014. Most definitely doable. Lots of traveling about but you can see so much.

Have a look at some of the tour companies as they may offer you a tour which has all of those things you want- only thing is they're expensive and you may feel tied to a group of people you might not get on with.

Diddnt you chilled for a few days to get use to the altitude?

this is why it is very hard to to all in 3 weeks when you consider a day or two of getting use to the altitude in cusco and lake titikaka

Disagree with you there. I went from Lima down the coast then up through the highlands for a number of days (so sightseeing and acclimatising gradually) going through lake titicaca as well and then having a night in Cuzco before the full Inca Trail. You can do it how you like. But I had ample time to acclimatise before Puno and the Inca Trail :)

You could just turn up in Cuzco and try to get used to it straight away or you could work up to it. 3 weeks is enough time to do all that you want, it's just about being efficient. If you want to have longer periods in one place then do it.

It's a trip of a lifetime and you should make it just how you like :)

How long did u stay in Lima?

Just doing the inca trail would take 5-7 days apparently :)

And getting to lake titicaca or the amazon takes a day each way(total of 4 days gone just for traveling to those places .

its a stretch. let me see.

Also i have asthma so that could effect me.

I did the high inca trail in Peru back in 2014, only there for I think it was 15 days though!

I would say you need a good few days to acclimate in Cusco but it's different for everyone.

Went with Exodus - very good company who used great local guides. Would go back with them again! Might buy my own flights though in future.

I think we had 2-3 days acclimatisation in Cusco before going high altitude trekking.

I didn't notice any difference other than a shortage of breath, two of the group got headaches and a bit of vomiting for a day, and one girl had a pulmonary embolism the moment we went higher!

It really does affect everyone differently
