Hi guys me and my girlfriend are about to move in with my parents so we can save for a mortgage so talk of spending money on my pc is a sore subject. Ive managed to convince her that I NEED a new gpu but when I foolishly mentioned a 980 costs over £500 she hit the roof, so I backed down from that idea. Thinking about it, I only game at 1080p anyway so might not be necessary anyway!

What I'm asking is, what card would give me a decent upgrade and smash anything at 1080p for quite some time for the best price over my amd 7950? The 7950 still does a decent job but I am starting to notice some jerkiness here and there on the likes of gta V and occasionally fallout 4.

For 1080p I think either the 970 or the 390 would do you fine (but moving forward the 390 seem to have better chance of delivering better performance in dx12 than the 970).

There was some mentioning of stuttering with Nvidia cards for GTX V, and reviewers seem to put it down to driver issue...not sure if Nvidia has fixed this yet.

for a man on a budget a second hand 290x is prettty decent, for buying new for around the £250-£270 mark there is the amd 390 or nvidia 970 or you can pick up a 390x for £300

970 or the 390 as stated. Both will perform within a **** hair of each other wins coming from either side. Research the features each card offers and go with it. The 970 gets my vote.

I thought about the 290x actually, wasn't sure on how much the performance increase would be? Is there much between a 290x and 390x?

Thanks guys for the help, its been great! I think I'll have to look around the 970 / 2 or 390x range then, one day I'll own a current geforce *80 series haha :)

sadly getting on the property ladder and doing all the grown up things like paying bills puts a nasty dent in the finances and has a very adverse effect on doing fun things like gaming, but dont worry you are not alone im sure many of us have wives that dont understand the need to upgrde to all the new shiny stuff

You should have started by saying a Titan goes for £800 and negotiated down to a 980 from there :p. I've been there though, when we bought our house I had to make my poor old 9700 pro last nearly 3 years.

A 970 or 2/390x will be fine at 1080p.

In the same boat, but luckily I pulled the "because its christmas" card and got away with it!

Second hand 290/290x's go cheap and would be a noticeable upgrade. Either that or look for a cheap 780ti.

Ok if 500-550 is too much then R9 Nano. 400 quid for a great card and best cost/perfomance ratio.
Or a used Fury X, for 415 quid. But Nano is actually the aircooled FuryX....

Yea if you're on a budget bite the bullet and buy second hand. I got a palit 770gtx 2gb from eBay for £100 for delivery. You'd probs something better for not much more.
