So are the rumours of a surface phone in the second half of 2016 likely to be real?

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/microsoft-surface-mobile-phone-news/

and plenty of other rumour articles (some of which have dubious typos etc.!)

Anyone have any insight?

The 950 and 950xl are a bit limp as flagships if Microsoft is really serious about gaining market share. Are they stop gaps? (I'm due an upgrade and wondering if I wait it out with my 1520 which is still excellent)

Bring it on I say if its truly x86 capable under the hood - even if I have to use a stylus for desktop stuff and the surface form factor could be seriously powerful for some functions. The ability to turn the phone into a multi-function input device when connected to an external display would be really useful as well.

I can't see it being too far from reality - the (electrical) internals in my Windows tablet are roughly the size of my smartphone just doesn't leave much space for a battery which is as big again but we must be getting there tech wise.

I love Surfaces.

Might not be able to resist even if it is Windows Phone.

But they have to careful not to trash the brand they have created.

I think they are real, however they aren't meant as a competitor to lumias. They will be phone for business centred around work, so expect a different set of hardware focus on that.

As long as it can play music and video well that would suit me perfectly. To be fair Lumias are pretty excellent on the productivity side of things.

Very tempted to stick it out with the 1520 and see what comes. I have no desire to go back to Android and the 950s aren't blowing me away.

Is second half of this year realistic?

Rumours are released alongside Redstone which is the next massive w10 update, tentatively slated for summer 2016.

I'm still clinging on to my 930 with the hope that shortly we will see an official sign of an imminent Surface Phone release.

As much as I want a 950 and a dock, I'd kick myself if a Surface Phone appeared later this year.

Will there be a 'surface' phone... most likely but it's not going to be for a while based on what I've been reading (development time etc). Also highly doubt it will look like the video in that link although something similar could be quite nice.

Basically MS really do need to come out with a phone that feels 'high end' and also get the key apps over onto windows mobile.

I've upgraded my 1520 to Win 10 today. I can't really see what benefit I'm going to get from upgrading to the 950XL so think I may stick it out.

I'm in exactly the same position. I can't quite convince myself about the 950 when there is a chance of a Surface phone.

Nothing really, much lighter.

But I miss the hardware buttons on my 1320, not the weight though. Although upgrade to 640 not 950, but same design cues.

For everything other than taking it out running I quite like the heft of the 1520. Feels solid.

My wife has the 640 and it is an exceptional phone for the money.
