so im going to grab a 980ti tomoz, Really want a EVGA one as i think they are all reference cards so a titan waterblock will fit.

However are the FTW or classified worth the extra ? I have a standard SC 980 and it clocked well beyond their top model. I mean are we just talking maybe a Extra 50-80mhz here and am i actually going to notice the difference in frames?

Choices :D

Why bother? You're on a 980 and this is the year of the shrink.

I have just sold the 980 as its going to be i think a year before a 980 ti replacement come out. Yes we will see the new 1070 and 1080 cards in 3-6 months but i really dont see them smashing the 980 ti off the top. and the TI cards take along time to come out so personally i think the 1080 will only be the power of a 980ti.

However i have just found out i cannot get a waterblock for the FTW only the SC and classified so that nails it down a little more

I have one and it's great, best GPU I have had build quality wise in a few years and I always buy the high end with aftermarket cooling, I did get a Nvidia reference 780ti and it was really well built but the extra power phases and the better quality components over stock always wins for me, I like nice stable and reliable cards, that's why I normally go high end aftermarket as sometimes I like to keep the cards for a good few years if there is nothing worth upgrading to (i'm not into updating for 10%-30% bumps, normally a 50% bump and up I will consider if I have the upgrade itch, so worth getting a well built card if you plan on keeping it a while or plan to abuse it with overclocking).

To be honest the more i think about it the more im tempted to ditch my water cooling loop. It just keeps adding a whole bunch of headache to every GPU upgrade and at least £100 for the water block. Plus draining the loop and getting Red coolant on the other halfs white towels goes down like a sack of spuds.if i ditch the loop its a £100 saving so then happy to buy the classified and a decent CPU air cooler and sell all my water cooling gear.

Would the added heat and noise eventually start to bug you though?!

I went for 2 EVGA SC ref cards and Kyrograph blocks and the temps are superb, as is the silence. I've not touched them yet (overclocking wise) and they're boosting to 1304 while staying under 40 degrees. Cost wise the blocks were about £83.

Agree completely about the pains with adding new bits to the loop but imo its worth it. To keep the Mrs happy i'd go buy some cheap cloths/towels from somewhere, also fit a drain tube if you haven't already, makes it a LOT easier and less messy. Everyone's happy ;)

I genuinely dont think noise will bother me as i game with a headset on. The mrs has a pc in the games room with a r9 390 on a standard cooler any way so thats going to continue to be the loudest card and that does not bother me.

Without doubt i see the advantage to liquid cooling but given the length of time i tend to keep hardware i seriously have to consider if its for me.

I might grab a aio and try it. If i dont like it give the aio to the mrs and stick the loop back in my machine. It will annoy me if i end up thermally limited on overclocks.

That's what my younger bro did, invested in a headset as he has 980's in sli. He says he can't hear the fans when they're on full power so got round it that way.

Whichever way you decide to go they are awesome cards. Best i've ever owned.

Enjoy :)

Yea i have a decent headset that is 7.1 and comfortable so i find it give me a good edge over stereo speakers any way. Think im going to grab the classified as the card is physically much bigger with bigger fans too. I did not realise how much taller the card is so that might help with noise. I will give it a whirl and see how it goes. My 980 just can quite cope on my 2k screen at 144hz so looking to really max my g-sync screen

Got the classified :D OMG this thing is HUGE !!! Compres to my 980 the height of the card is mental. Time to go play

Enjoy mate. Also great idea about going to air and dropping the water cooling. Find a nice air cooler for the CPU and don't even bother with the AIO cpu coolers I had one of the corsair 100's range and sent it back when they first came out the pump noise annoyed me on them, not sure about now but rather have fan noise that is gentle than a strange rattling noise.

Also take the stickers off the fan mate on the centre part, they can come off in use and jam up the fans, I see you didn't remove them from the 980 too.
