13k... Fiesta ST? or MK6 Golf GTI / GTD

Buying a house isn't simple. Before we knew it we spent 10k on furnishings in the space of a couple of months and that was 6 years ago. I would at least wait till you have sorted everything then leave the change for a car.

You renting at the moment or still living with parents?

They aren't even as quick as a Civic Type R are they

Yes they are, even at stock.

+ lots more torque + can be mountuned under warranty to make them faster than the Type R.

I have driven an EP3 Type R in the past and whilst good, it isnt as fun as the Fiesta ST in my opinion.

Mountune Fez 6.4 to 60.. it's just numbers it doesn't tell you anything about in gear. I loved my Type R back in the day but times move on.

The sensible option would be to spend the money on furnishings... oh well scrap this idea, I will have to do a new post in a bit of what to get for 3k! haha I know what Tim will say :)

As a quick side note... the feel of my EP3 when I first had it lowered, polybushed, was amazing. Better than the new Fiesta ST I drove. But the Civic soon became a bit tiresome and stiff... but to be fair one of those in good shape, bog standard, if they still made them and it was near new would be a great drive. I can't imagine buying a "good" one without spending 7k now! When I first got mine it drove so nicely, I loved it. But the bushes got tired so I stupidly went mad lowering it and changing stuff.

I was looking at a near new car so I've not got to go chasing perfection, changing brake fluid, gearbox oil, health checks, suspension bushes, bodywork etc etc. I've spent thousands on every car I've had, can't get attached as of late and end up selling! I'm bad for it. The Focus was due a set of tyres, I really was itching to do remaining fluids I hadn't done, engine/gearbox mounts etc... but I didn't "love" it. Someone give me £6700 for it so it made sense to just see it off.

How about one of those Volvo C30's if you insist on a hatch? Too similar to the Focus? Have seen the geartronic ones for 5k.

Even though leasing is normally a waste of money some of the deals on the ST Fezza are crazy. They can be had for around 1.6k down and £160 p/m and if your picky about your car then a new one that u can give back in 2 yrs surely fits the bill? Beats spending 13k on a used one.
As for the Golf options how are they any better than your modded ST u just sold?

I just like the Golf's, inside and out. Subtle and "classy" (I await someone to pick at that lol). If I liked the Focus enough I'd have kept it. It was a fast car but... it's gone and I don't miss it. Says it all. I know literally nothing about leasing... and my milage could be cut back perhaps but I'd still do 12k a year easily.

I can't get to grips with the back end of them Tim.

If you want something subtle and classy get a Saab 9-3 Aero with a Noob Tune Remap. 250BHP, 30mpg average and ~3K.

This, but 9-5 instead :) - just a better car all round and 260bhp stock

Or the 2.8 V6 turbo 9-3s are coming down to that sort of price now too

The Golf is far from classy :p The GTD Is the new Chav's Hot hatch of choice because there is performance with the all important mega 70 MPG'zzz that people are so concerned about nowadays. Don't think I've seen a GTD that's anything other than black with tinted windows and the driver seat reclined to maximum.
As for the Focus ST seems you got a very good price for a 2006! I only paid 5k for my 1 owner with 70k on. I'm the same about not loving mine so far and I am considering either selling or modding with a remap etc to make it more fun.

Indeed, they must have been a right mug to buy a 2006 St for near 7k!

There's next to no GTD's in Stoke, Chav's don't really have much money here :D

I don't mind the look of Saab's but need better mpg, I've ran this 1.8 Astra for a week and only used £30 fuel opposed to £60-70 the Focus would use!

I put my car on Pistonheads, £6995, then dropped it to £6850. He came, wanted to give me £6300 but I fought hard, I would have been mad to say no, car on 72k as well so I did good. It did owe me a bit though but I paid £5700 for it to start with.

The Saab 2.0T will be better than your focus, the 9-5 2.3T about the same.

9-3 Aero TTID (twin turbo, 180bhp) are getting down towards 3k now - they're actually pretty robust engines too

House before car everytime.

A man's house is his castle.
I'd drive my old 1.0 Micra and have my house than have a flash Beemer and live with Mumsie :p.

Cars depreciate, houses (generally) appreciate :).

Where are you located in the high class establishment of Stoke On Trent? :D.

lol, what a mug!

In all fairness the house deposit thing is kinda a seperate entity so I have that covered :)

Unless the deposit is at least 40% (or whatever level is required to get the optimal LTV rates) I'd challenge that mentality. In fact in general I don't subscribe to the '1 pot of money for this, 1 pot of money for that mentality'. You have just one single pot of money that you have to divide up in the most appropriate way for all spending channels (notwithstanding any ringfenced stuff like help-to-buy ISAs or whatever).

Still can't fathom this - had a quick look on autotrader and it looks like you can quite easily get 2008 facelift models with similar/less miles from dealers for 7.5-8k and there are loads of 2006 70-80k mile ST's for under £6k.

What is your secret!

House first for sure.

Spending half the budget will get something fun too.

I agree on the comment about small cars being fun. Even my old Polo was pretty fun firing about slower roads. All but useless on motorways right enough. But a Fiesta ST would be fun as I would think. The Golf will be capable. But probably not fun.

Jono, I just HATE losing money so I advertise for way too much. You have to live in hope! I've still lost loads but I've got more than the car was worth so I was like, take it mate, deal lol.

I have thought about it and spoke to the missus and you're all right, it's so hard to stop the itch with cars and my want for something much newer to stop me going OTT with preventative maintenance, but I am going to use it towards a house. A fancy car can come later on.

I think in about July I will see what I can get for about 3 to 4k which will keep me entertained for a while. I need to stop chasing perfection on older cars though! Such a bad habit.

Seeing as this thread is open what would you chuck 3-4k at? There's so many options!! Historically I've had hot hatches... but I've always liked the idea of a real tidy E46 for example, a MK5 Golf GTI/GT TDI, another MK6 Fiesta ST? Don't think I fancy another Type R to be fair, I'm not a big Volvo/Saab fan although I think they're nice enough, just never had a desire to own one... God knows :D
