13k... Fiesta ST? or MK6 Golf GTI / GTD

I fancy something german I think. I need to learn about E46's and the best model to aim for, for about £3500 leaving a few hundred in the pot for any immediate problems lol.

Could probably get a half decent MK2 Octavia VRS for 3-4K. Probably be approaching 100k miles though but most things for that sort of money will.

Yep I sold my 56 reg VRS with 90k on it for 4K a few months ago. Was mechanically immaculate and had tons done to it, but body and paint weren't great.

E46 330i is a good shout but will be quite old for that price. ST220 is a good bet too and if you can get over the image then the X type is a good buy for that money (it's what I did!). The X type 3.0 is basically the same underpinnings as the ST220 but with a VVT engine to give it a bit more power than the ST, with AWD to boot. In the right colour combo they don't look too geriatric - a black/dark blue sport premium saloon for example

You can get some pretty good "old" old cars for good money. Then wait a few years for the Fiesta ST to drop in price. You might need to go back quite a few years to find something as fun though :)

Buy an old mx-5 and stick a supercharger in it if you want something comical. Just don't try to drive it in ice/snow :D

Not a lot of love in here for the Gold GTD but to be fair I prefer them to the Fiesta ST, I think the interior is far far better and both a nice and quick. I think the Leon Cupra (as mentioned is decent too). Around my parts a Fiesta ST is a bit of chavmobile to be honest.

I have found the oppsite to be true to be honest. At the moment the new Fiesta ST is still at a price point above what most "chavs" ( the real scummy ones :p) can afford.

In 5/6 years or so when it approaches the £5k or less mark, it will of course become the chavs vehicle of choice :D

Obviously the advantage of the ST over the GTD at £13k is that an ST at that price is only going to be a year/year and a half old and have some warranty left etc. A GTD for 13k is going to be what, 4 years + old and out of warranty. Not to mention the GTD will be slower (30bhp down - 45bhp down with the warrantied mountune mp215 kit you can get), a diesel, arguably not as good to drive, and not even much better fuel economy ( not even cheaper tax either! :p).

There is also the matter of finding one as well equipped as an ST3, which whilst not impossible, is probably not easy.

The only real advantage it has is that it is a bit bigger and granted, the interior will be nicer quality (though the ST's interior really isnt that bad in comparison to many golfs i have sat in).

Not driven a GTD but have driven an Octavia VRS with the same engine. Pokey enough but if you're expecting a true hot hatch experience then you'll be disappointed - hot hatches should be buzzy and revvy, not driver all their power in one big lump low down the rev range. Decent enough engines and cars but I suspect really disappointing if you're really after a hot hatch

Save the new budget of 4k you have now for the future. The astra can do the job for the time being and you won't get anal about it like a faster special marque. I think what the question really is, "Would a Fiesta ST or GTD keep me happy?", would an ST or GTD stop the time being sunk into perfecting anything else cheaper?

Admittedly you have been looking at the Fiesta ST for a while, ever since before i got mine, maybe you should take one out to scratch that itch again and see if you do really want it. I took one out a few times and every time I knew this was the car i wanted. It's a shame you're so far away as i'd take you out and let you have a go in mine.

I should have put the deposit and money going forward into a house deposit but i didn't...i don't regret this decision though as i'll be keeping this ST for the long haul. It ticks all the boxes and is the right car for me right now and the foreseeable future. It's just the right package of speed, cost, driving dynamics. I don't mind paying for it as my car is a hobby and not just an A2B device.

With the mature hat on, I think you've got to step out of your position and try to look at it from the outside for a moment.

You're in a situation as a 35 year old to either get a house, or buy a warm hatchback? Albeit a very capable (in some respects) hatchback, it's still just a car.

It's not even as though you don't have a vehicle, you do. I'd be getting just as excited about getting my own place as a new car! :D

Which is why I bought a used E46 330Ci a couple of years back and have been saving for a house deposit since. One day I'll hopefully have the AMG parked on the drive but until then... Go for the house.

the fez st is a great little car and revo or mountune its even better,i had one for a year it must have been a Friday car as the engine blew the week I was trading it in

Are you comparing the STd (still can't get over that one...) and GTD? I test drove both and my takeway was that GTD is less racey/chav looking (though I wouldnt' say it looks bad). Imho GTD is just better (perf, interior, driving) but you get a lot more kit for your money with ford.

Well, I was comparing the merits of a £13k Fiesta ST (which will be a 1-2 year old ST2/ST3) and a £13k Golf GTD (which will be an 2011/2012 car). For the money and for what the OP wants, the Fiesta ST is much better in my opinion (for the reasons I listed)

I could probably list 20 cars I want, with ease :D

I am going to make do with the Astra until it blows up and put the money into a House - Fiesta ST's will be getting made for a while yet so I will still be able to get the same age/deal, or even go brand new as whatever I buy at that kind of money I will definitely try my very best to keep! Who knows, a nice 5 year low rate deal and get the 5 year warranty offer for £260 or so would do me nicely, like Logsi said, they're just a master of all trades with fun being a big part of it and still a very cheap car to own all in all.
