Hi,

Over the last few days, I've had a few system crashes and the logs in windows indicate that its due to a graphics hardware problem.

I'll resit the card in the mobo and monitor the situation. But it got me thinking of what to replace it with to update to a more recent generation device.

What would be a typical replacement for a HD6800 in today's equivalent graphics cards? Around £140ish which is my usual amount in past card purchases.

For 110-140 you can get the R9-370 but i wouldn't buy that but the R9-380 for £155.

That said, the 370 is already almost twice as fast as a HD6870.
 
A 380 is the best mid-range option and is a huge jump up from a 6870. Alternatively you could try and get a dirt cheap 7850 card which would be fine for 1080p gaming on medium and wait for the big die shrink.
 
Go for a 380 as mentioned :)


Unless you don't need something even that powerful? What are you using your machine for?

the last equivalent for HD6800 is the R9 370, but i wouldn't advise you getting it because it's a re-rebrand of the HD7800, so AMD been dragging this card since 2012 it's kinda old, and it's price is way too close to the R9 380, which is a brand new architecture with way more features, efficiency, and also more powerfull.
 
Hi chaps.
Just checking out those r9 380's because my old graphics card has stopped working altogether now, and I've had to disconnect the power cables to it and resort to onboard graphics for now (Asus z87 - pro).

How come somes makes of r9 380 say their card only needs 175 watts but the Sapphire ones say they need 500 watts?

I'd prefer to buy a Sapphire - but I only have a Corsair 500w PSU, and worried that it wont handle the rating of a Sapphire card.

Just to say thanks everyone.
I popped in a Sapphire r9 380 4gb today and it's working brilliantly.
I risked not upgrading by PSU and it is handling it no problem.

Now to get a new game to give it a good workout.

Glad you like it, and you took the advice.
The PSU recommendations are allways well over the actual requirements, they do it to be safe if you have a crappy PSU.
