looking for some advice if I may. :)

We test drove the new BMW X1 today in 20d Sport trim. We were/are thinking of the Xline variant. It's maybe a little more than we want to spend. It's too new a car to find 2nd hand/ex-demo etc...so are looking at alternatives.

Considered so far

3 Series Touring - same cost as X1 in the spec we want (more or less) - Xdrive - 2nd hand might be an option.
Focus Estate - 1.5 or 1.6 ecoboost?
Qashqai - Boring inside
X-Trail - slow
Outlander Phev - test drove the older model and it's too boat like - perhaps too big for our needs and roads we use frequently

Mileage -15k to 22k
Roads - A and B roads mainly in foothills of the Cairngorms.
Must: Be an estate or hatchback and have a large boot. No RWD

Any advice appreciated. :)

Golf R, maybe. Never thought of that. Thanks - will look into it. Audi - no chance - Wife has a pet hate of them. :p

hah. yes. After stupidly trying the X1 I don't know if that is possible. Our other car will be a Fiesta Zetec S 1.0 which we both like a lot, it made us think - this is meant to be a really good car! :p

How about an Octavia vRS Estate. Boot is over 600L, and no RWD so you'll have the full used market available (although depending on desired spec you could probably get a new one within budget should you wish). It's (relatively) compact compared to most other cars with a boot of that size, which may be of interest if you are concerned about some cars being too big.
[Edit: may as well proffer the Superb Estate as well before someone else does, if size not an issue. New model came out last year and via a broker again should be around budget brand new]

Of course, could be the Skodas will be a bit 'boring' for your B-road shenanigans.

Only 1 car in your list satisfies this:

Must: Be an estate or hatchback and have a large boot. No RWD

So it has to be the Focus?

3 series touring X-drive is an estate, not RWD, and has (statistically at least) a larger boot than the Focus.

the 3 series is a rear wheel drive. have you considered a6 estate or volvo (v70)

There are some rather nice new shape Mondeo Titanium X estates going on AT for around the £25k mark.

I drove one last week, 2.0 TDCi Powershift and it was a very nice place to be.

It might not matter to you, but personally I couldn't spend that much on a car and have headlights which look worse than those on many sub £1k cars. God knows why people don't spec xenons from new.
