New car - c25k

What about the 320GT? Bigger boot, more leg room in the back and a similar price.

Compared to the 3 Touring though it has an especially nasty interior - I don't know why, but having sat in both the 3GT has a disgusting interior comparatively. They may even be the same inside, but the 3GT just looks and feels.. .ugh..

Mileage -15k to 22k
Roads - A and B roads mainly in foothills of the Cairngorms.
Must: Be an estate or hatchback and have a large boot. No RWD

Any advice appreciated. :)

Going to suggest two models often overlooked...

Volvo V60 - decent sized boot (though not huge), front wheel drive, and can get great deals on new (£7-8k discounts) and nearly new.
e.g. http://selekt.volvocars.co.uk/en/us...s-Edition-D4-Delivery-Miles-Only-Car-s1bgy86j (basic model - but with everything you'd need)
or http://selekt.volvocars.co.uk/en/used-cars/Volvo/V60/R-Design-Lux-Navigation-Winter-Pack-t4bg58a2 (top spec sports model)

Volvo XC60 - big boot, front wheel drive (or AWD - but possibly above budget), and again great deals (£7-8k discounts) and nearly new (£25k-ish for 15 plates).

The new D4 engine puts out 180-190bhp (depending on precise model year) and can do 0-62 in about 7.5s.

Check out www.drivethedeal.com to see what kind of pricing you can get on lots of models - brilliant tool to negotiate with dealers!

with the outlander did you try the PHEV one - the non electric version is hugely boat like, the electric has the batteries in the floor so a much lower center of mavity, thus rolls a load less.
I actually quite liked it but the wife didn't like the milk float noise when it was on electric :D

I have the 2008 outlander turbo and it is quite unboatlike!

I must say though for 25 grand your list of cars is boring.

Yes, tried the PHEV - I didn't like how it drove at all -and I really wanted to like it. I travel on a lot of twisty mountainous roads in Deeside/Aberdeenshire daily (where I test drove it) and more into the Highlands regularly and it didn't feel like the right car for me.

I must say though for 25 grand your list of cars is boring.

That's why I came here for advice.:)

We booked a test drive for the 320d quoted earlier. Well...not impressed that after they photo copied our driving licenses, made us sign a disclaimer, put dealer plates on, started up the car. Oh what Is this the car is telling us? Flat tyre? After the sales rep figured out his left from his right and confirmed the flat tyre he said, sorry. No test drive. FFSAmaturesBBQ!!!.....we test drove a none x drive 320d M Sport. The rep in the back seat taking notes like a driving instructor insisted we would not find an X drive m sport. What you mean like the one we were just quoted for from your rivals?

Disillusioned. Disappointed. But Still thinking...3 series. Just not from that particular dealer.

OK, so we slightly blew our budget. :o

320d Xdrive Sport Tourer ordered. :D

Delivery ETA start of March

Mineral grey
manual
electric towbar

still time to amend the spec. But thinking of LED front lights and sun protection glass.

You blew your budget....

....to get a 4 pot diesel with a manual box :(

If you only add one more option to the spec PLEASE make it the auto box - it transforms the car. Manual + 4 cylinder diesel = awful.

Yes - the problem is that the power delivery of the engine does not suit a manual box. The engine has a very narrow powerband, nothing much happens below 2000rpm and once you get to about 3500rpm it's all over. So you are constantly stirring the box to do anything and it becomes very tiresome.

With the auto, this just all goes away. The autobox is absolutely excellent and just gets on with the job of making sure you are (almost) always seemlessly in the power band.

Seriously, go for the auto.

The only thing it doesn't fix is that irritating delay every time you want to pull away quickly or something.

Go for the Sport Auto Transmission - it's only £140 more than the regular auto but it gets you nice aluminium paddle shifters on the wheel, a better more premium gear-shifter and a better software programme for the gearbox.
