Hello,

Just put together a new machine.

I decided to go for an MSI Z170A - G43 PLUS mobo

http://www.msi.com/product/motherboard/Z170A-G43-PLUS.html#hero-overview

and fitted some Corsair dominator platinum ram... https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...al-channel-kit-black-cmd8gx4m2-my-460-cs.html

I'll hold my hands up and admit I don't have the first clue about overclocking etc. I noticed in the system bios that the ram is running at 2166mhz when its rated at 3000Mhz. I adjusted the settings so it ran at 2966Mhz (I think) and the over voltage protection light illuminated on the board. I dropped it down to 2666Mhz and it still come on. I've put it back to Auto which takes it back down to 2166Mhz and the light goes off??

It booted OK at 2666Mhz but the over voltage light stayed on so not really sure what else to do??:confused:

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried running it on XMP settings?

I looked through the manual and couple find any mention of an overvoltage protection light.

Thanks for the reply.

There's nothing in the manual about the over voltage protection so I was a little miffed by the red light that come on but when I looked at the mobo on the MSI website as linked above about half way down the page it says...

ENHANCED CPU OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION
Onboard overvoltage protection prevents overvoltage and short-circuit damage of the CPU and other components. A red LED near the 24 pin CPU power connector let you know that overvoltage protection is activated for easier troubleshooting.

Thats what come on when I tried upping the speed of the memory. Its got 2 preloaded settings on the XMP settings. I notice on the OC website it says the rams SPD is 2133Mhz - do you think thats why its defaulted to that speed?

I don't have a clue about setting the latency values etc but would have liked to of tweeked my ram a little if its sold as 3000Mhz stuff!

Does the system still boot with the light on?

Yup, seems to work fine. I set it to XMP 1 last night so its now showing as 2666Mhz in the Bios but the lights on.

Not done anything fancy on the machine apart from internet/spotify but it seems nice and stable. Just not sure why the lights come on

To me it sounds like enabling xmp is giving the ram 1.35v (like its meant to), and the light on the motherboard is just there to let you know that your ram voltage is higher than the standard 1.2v?

I don't think I'd worry about it too much myself as long as everything is working fine.
