Does the plane release you at altitude so you can glide down or is the plane required throughout?

It's shown with in. Plane is needed all the time.
You detach from the board and parachute down.

Which will make it a very expensive sport, but then that's never stopped people before.

Well that's kind of the point at the end, so as long as you don't fall off, before you get to a suitable height.
