Exclusive – Nvidia Talks GameWoks And DirectX 12 Plans For 2016

popcorn.gif

We all know how this thread end up its not even worth typing anything that's not anti nvidia/gameworks etc.

I don't think any of us (well, many of us) is under any illusion here, nVidia are absolutely ruthless when it comes to getting on top and will pretty much do anything to stay there :)

Just because I have one of their cards (beaming all my dodgy internet business to them no doubt) doesn't mean that I have to like them ;) :D

Never had a problem with gameworks myself, probably due to not playing the latest aaa titles.

The few games i have played with gameworks i enjoyed very much and the performance was fine.

Carry on Nvidia i say.

Just dont pull an amd and hike your prices up even more ;)

Not sure why you post in Nvidia threads. You clearly don't like them, so it just comes across as sour. I never let politics get in the way and just enjoy my hardware and maybe you should do the same? I personally like GameWorks and some of the effects like Flex and WaveWorks are great. With the latest news of Bethesda adding weapon debris effects, I will give that another play later and probably do some recording if time allows. :)

No need to explain yourself, Gregster - after all you've already made your true intentions clear in the past.

It's great that some enjoy Gameworks, though I for one don't see the point in gaining minor graphical tweaks at the expensive of a massive loss of frames.

Wont ever happen like that though Greg, every dev will need to configure the effects to their engine.

It will always require the devs to configure and optomise, it will be the same for AMD as well, the difference will come down to support from Nvidia / AMD and how willing they are to support the games makers.

Totally agreeed Si and whilst it should be the devs who make these great effects and get them running with as little cost as possible, sadly they are under huge pressure to get the game released by deadlines and I feel for those guys. WB/Ubisoft/EA etc dictate the time lines and no excuses.

See, that is taking part in the debate and much better. The thing you say is correct but you do have the option of turning those effects off. I haven't seen any GameWorks effects that are not turn off and onable in any of the GameWorks games, so if your GPU isn't up to it or you don't feel it is worth it, just turn them off :)

It dosn't help that my work got a mention lol :)

Every market has room for competition if it is done correctly, if you produced a card as good as anything either 2 has to offer, with better savings and at a competitive price you will sell them.

Its like cars really, you can buy a SEAT, its basically a VW or an Audi, its got the same engine etc, only the packaging is different and the options, its often cheaper and gives the same performance for less money.

The shrewd buyer looks at the VW and the Audi and the SEAT or Skoda and says well i can get the same performance and for my money get all these extras if i buy the SEAT or Skoda than i would if i bought the Audi or the VW, while some of the extra might be as refined the underlying car is still the same identical car.

The brand concious buyer sticks with the Audi or the VW if thats what they normally buy.

Solid points in fairness. I can't disagree with any of that.

Me neither, I actually think you have hit the nail on the head there. It's not all about performance....it's in the branding. After all, as I said a few posts ago in another thread (Or was it this one???) about AMD cards kicking ass in benchmarks in the mid-range and yet the 970 is the most popular card on the Steam Survey...that's good solid branding for you regardless of pure performance.

Nvidia are like Apple, VW and Audi. They have a solid product but an even more solid brand. And they have all also been a bit too keen with a few underhand practices in their time, that personally I didn't think they needed to do. But it hasn't seemed to have hurt them to any great extent....yet.

The thing is....VW and Audi got stung by the naughty emissions stunts they were pulling. I wonder if DX12 will do the same thing for Nvidia and the Maxwell cards.

In the only vaguely dependable DX12 benchmark we have 980TI and Furyx show similar performance as D 11, as expected.

I like the idea of gameworks, but it should be open source / from another vendor. Nvidia having there hands in how games are designed is a little dubious and even if you choose not to be sceptical it's still got the inherent issue of being biased to Nvidia anyway since it's there own tech so they will choose to make it in a way that suits them of course.

I don't mind the idea of gameworks but it just needs to be fair / open and when you see the kind of performance drops as well it's clearly got some room for improvement and I don't know if Nvidia are the ones who are honestly going to do that without trying to hamper the competition. Overall it's good and when I use it then it does improve the game but it's entirely missable in my opinion, there's nothing that makes me feel I must have it and there never has been which is quite sad when the interview makes it out to be stuff that is meant to be years ahead. I think the main stuff I'd be interested in are simply hbao + and other aliasing techniques. Keep the game clear and sharp and that will do Nvidia, the rest of your techniques tend to look okay but not great anyway.
