Do I have any stance on this (tyres)

Hi, bought a new (second hand) Car beginning of December.

it went back to them for 10 days, 5 days after I picked it up as some things needed sorting out.

When I purchased & also took vehicle for a test drive I mentioned front tyres looked low. Was advised they would be changed if under 3mm

I have done just under 1000 miles in the vehicle since I have had it. (20 days ownership) and the front two tyres I have just had checked at a independent tyre specialist who says they are both nearing being illegal. (down to wear indicator) and also low on part of both side walls.

I have sent a email to the MD of the dealership just, but thought I would ask here to see if I have any hope of things being sorted in a positive way.

The dealership is part of a uk wide one.

Just left a sour feeling, that I could have to cough up for two front tyres when they should have been sorted before collection of the vehicle.

I am not very car minded. So do not know lots about these things.

Thank you

Got anything in writing about them sorting the tyres before delivery or any evidence that they were under 3mm at that point?

If the answer is no then the best you can hope for is goodwill.

they should have a record of the tyre tread depth when they did the service mot/inspection of the car, so i cant see how they can say you have worn them down in 1000 miles if they do ask to see the paperwork, or check your paperwork for the last mot inspection sheet, assuming they MOT'd the car just before collection.

Having what they're going to do in writing = you can have them. If not, then it'll be good will as already said, which is pretty much no.

What is the car and what is the tyre size?

Either the tyre place can see you're not very car minded and are capitalising on it, or the tyres were always that low and the dealer has sold it like that. Either way, I think you're going to struggle, and assuming you haven't just bought a 911 Turbo or something with huge tyres, getting a new pair of front tyres yourself shouldn't set you back too much at all.

Besides, if the dealer did it, they'd just stick on the cheapest Chinese tat they could find. Best just do it yourself and get quality tyres.

Your problem as far as I can see - should have checked them yourself

As above they'd put something horrible on anyway, would have been better off telling them to leave it and give a little more money off

Put it down to experience, if they so happen to offer something then great but don't get your hopes up

What car is it? If they were 3mm when you bought it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that you have worn them down to near 2mm (near illegal) in 1000 miles.

Dealer said they'd replace them if under 3mm, which is fair.
You didn't push for new tyres regardless, so there's no comeback now.

Measure the treads for yourself - what are they?

Lets face it, even if the dealer agrees to replace the tyres at this stage they are more than likely going to be made in China.

I would suck it up, save yourself a headache and put some decent boots on it when they are required.

Yep if you had nothing in writing then you've got no recourse, especially if you've driven it for a reasonable distance since.

Who takes their car to a tyre shop to check the tread though? Just feel it with your hands - you could have said there and then "those are nearly illegal, I'll buy it for X if you put new midrange tyres on it"

Exactly. You are basically worrying over a pair of Linglongs or something. Just replace them with something decent and enjoy the car.

As an aside, I would trust the opinion of a tyre specialist about as much as that of someone who glanced at the car from 100 yards away. My wife was very stressy after we went to collect her car from the local dealership after a service when she was told the tyres were "nearly illegal". They throw that term around to panic people into throwing money at them. Hers had 4mm across the central 3/4 of the tread...

If it's a "big" dealership as quoted then would this be true? When I purchased my Accord from a Honda dealership, I pointed out the state of the tyres and they replaced all 4 with what the car had on when it left the factory, so 4 Yokohama AVS dB tyres. Not the greatest tyres in the world but certainly not Chinese ditch finders :)

My father had a similar situation from a Ford dealership, they promised and never did. He returned his Mondeo and it came back with two Landsail tyres on it.

Anything a dealer does at this stage is going to be counted as a 'good will gesture'. I can't see them sheading out on premium boots

Got this yesterday
It is a document in a PDF format.

All the details within in (I have just taken a snap shot for you) are dated

BUT checking the document properties it seems it was created 25/01/2016 @09:46:25

They are saying

'Please find attached our vehicle inspection sheet for your vehicle, the tyre tread depth are recorded from the vehicle as you can see the least amount of tread showing on the near side front middle of the tyre at this time and mileage was 3.5mm.

With the legal limit been 1.6mm and your tyres been over 3mm which is our internal replacement limit these tyres were within the Perrys policy to remain on the vehicle'

Bit annoyed to be honest as it looks like I will have to burden the cost of the tyres. But the fronts cannot have had that much tread on them when I had it. As the back ones look brand new.

The crystal report may well have been generated at the stated date on the report, they may have only exported it to pdf when you asked for a copy.
