Fun businesses to set up?

weeekend craft events. something i did recently on holiday and it was lots of fun even for myself and 27 and 3/4 guy, and the family, all kids all enjoyed it. something that doesn't need much professionalism to it, just the right tools and supplies, and the right costs which i imagine to be minimal if you can find good places to do it. i think it'd be great to have your kids show other kids how to paint already made pottery, or decorate vases, make candles etc. parents can organise etc. something for the whole family to run and do. at the beginning even if it's not that busy it'll still be a fun thing to do with your kids. just need to find some where perhaps 2 hours every Saturday morning. you'll need tables, chairs, and supply some small pots of paint, a variety of blank ready made pottery scupltures, perhaps some pictures to paint.

Those Irish dance dresses cost a fortune.

Maybe your missus can make them. Using the Ferengi Laws your daughter could model them !!

I'm not really following here -

You want minimum outlay, hardly any profit, but you want your wife and kids to work in the business.

You have no idea yourself what you want - but you want others to give you ideas/suggestions.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster - why not ask you wife what she wants to do??

An "Art" shop..
Kids paint the "abstract" stuff ;)
Then slap ridiculously over priced tags on them.

Wife sits at the till reading a book all day...

Win win

No I'm quite settled on a traditional sweet shop, but the art/craft angle sounds good.

Soft play/cafe/arts n crafts/sweets/kids parties

ice cream van or food van

if this is more of a fun thing then at least you've not got fixed overheads then... if you decide that actually this summer you're going to take time off then you can just put your business to one side and leave it for a bit...

whereas a physical shop set up... you've got a bit more responsibility/commitment there

i think you should be looking at an online business here, at first at least.

Something like arts and crafts on easy or the popular auction site mean minimal outlay and risk.

If its really successful then maybe move to bricks and mortar.

but how is any of this going to be achieved with "minimum outlay".

Stock, premises, insurance, business account, accountant, heating, lights, rates, rent etc etc.

Having done the "family" business when growing up- I can honestly say that my mum was working 60+hours a week to make a profit.

Childcare. Hire someone to to help your wife and open a small daycare for about 5-8 kids. Parents will drop about $1500-2000 a month, and you don't have to provide anything apart from supervision and toys - nappies, wipes and food come from the parents. You could make 7-10K a month.

you will need a license for this though iirc.
