So I part own a business with my dad, and I'm trying to convince him to switch to electronic bookkeeping. We have an accountant that does pretty much everything, VAT, payroll etc. So I just need something basic to be able to track daily takings, expenses, VAT, cashflow etc. Excel will be good enough I guess, but I have limited knowledge when it comes to making a decent enough template to use.

Just get Xero of Sage One. Makes life so much easier. I find that must Accountants have a xero licence nowdays, so you can get them to just log straight into your books if you need help.

My god the memory recall................

Sage on the Amstrad PCW oh the days in 1989.

If Sage still going go with them.

sage unforunately. i think sage needs to get with the times and go for a complete over hall with it's look and approach. Sage could so easily be online, so you data can be accessible any time from any where by anyone (that you let have access). I'm stuck with sage simply because my accountant is through my mum and she/them want me to use sage

FreeAgent or Xero

FreeAgent gets an extra vote for this:

Sage does do this nowadays with their cloud based my drive

I use xero just to send invoices out. They look professional and easy to track however I don't use the reconciliation function.

I use an excel document my accountant gave me which I assume he dumps the data into various other forms for the rest of the calculations.

I only really update every 3rd month for the VAT calculation. I don't have many transactions.

We use Xero at work, and have done for quite a while, but I've been looking in to FreeAgent for my freelance work. Glad to see some positive reviews here. Caged, that screen shot feature would be really helpful as I'm sat here doing the last of my return now!

Sage Drive is a cargo-cult feature designed to make people think Sage is now 'in the cloud'. It's nothing like that, it's complete toilet.

I must admit, I've recently got this up and running for a client of mine on various machines and I wasn't impressed

I can quote, invoice, produce purchase orders and even organise work schedules and do time and attendance (with a supported add on) using qb online. Relatively cheap too! Plus the accountant can do vat etc remotely.
