Gigabyte P35X V5 info

Hi,

After a lot of research I am looking to buy the Gigabyte P35X V5, which on paper seems to offer the best trade-off between power and portability.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...x-980m-8gb-gddr5-gaming-laptop-lt-068-gi.html

Since I can't find any review of the version with the 4k screen - does anyone have any info about the display quality? Is it matte or glossy?

Reading this forum I got the impression that someone bought it already.
What are your general impressions about the laptop?
How is the build quality and keyboard? I've read that on previous models the keyboards weren't great.

What is the actual weight of the laptop and the power supply?

I am also open to other suggestions, considering the following:
I am looking for a laptop for computer vision research - mostly for CUDA programming (real-time image processing), and practically no gaming.
Since I already work on a powerful desktop PC, the laptop would be used for working away from the lab - therefore portability is one of the main factors.

I am also very much attracted by the MSI GS40, but I am not sure how significant the performance loss of the GTX 970m 3GB will be (compared to the GTX 980m 8GB), any thoughts?
Any info on eGPU support for the GS40?

Thanks!

Does anyone know at least if the screen is glossy or matte, and how is its quality?
I'm really in a hurry to decide.

Hi Hagn,

Thanks for the interest. I can confirm the display is matte, and we've only gotten compliments on our Skylake lineup's displays.

Let us know if we can answer anymore questions!

Thanks!

Hi hagn,

Sorry, missed your earlier post, but thanks to Ryu_86 for responding:-)

Just to let you know, and not sure how urgent your purchase is, but we have requested a review/feedback from OcUK staff member who has recently had one of these machines for work pruposes.

We will chase this for you today.

Brilliant, thank you very much Ryu_86 and Atom80!
It's a big plus for Gigabyte to have helpful reps on the forum.

I am one step closer and very tempted to go for the P35X V5, the only thing that still worries me are reports of previous models having serious bending problems and very bad keyboards.
Did anything improve in that regard?

One more question - since portability is one of my main criteria - do you know the exact weight of the laptop and of its power brick?

Ideally I'd like to decide this week, a review would be amazing, please let me know if it gets published somewhere!
I also intend to write one when I get the laptop (whichever I choose) to help others, there is a big lack of good reviews of many high-end laptops.
It's a big problem because those laptops are (depending on one's location) nearly impossible to try in person before buying.

Hi hagn,

There will always be "opinion" and views out there refering to quality, but having used an older generation P35 for the last 18 months, the chassis is robost and not bent and I feel the keyboard is solid and nice to use.

Having seen the new V5 model out of the box at OcUK last week, this version is certainly "improved" further. The chassis remains the same in design to the eye, but our R&D make small imporvements all the time. I would also say that the keyboard rigidity is much better than it was a few generations ago, but as stated I am using a V2 model and the flex is minimal when pushed and non-existant during normal usage.

We are confident in the product design and quality.

If you check our page here, you can see weight and dimensions:

http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5696#kf

Weight of the 200W power adapter is not significant, around 500grammes.

Hope that helps and gives you further assurance.

Hi,

Thanks again for the useful info. I think I'll go for the P35X.
I looks like you guys are providing fantastic customer support over here :)

I have just two more questions:
1) What is the refresh rate of the 4k screen? I've read about certain models limited at 48Hz.
2) Is there any possibility that Thunderbolt 3 could get enabled with some future firmware, or is the laptop missing hardware support for it?

Thank you in advance!

I finally ordered the laptop! It should arrive by Wednesday, I will write a review once I spend some time with it.

My questions however still remain actual, especially the one regarding Thunderbolt 3 support!

EDIT: I originally complained of a price increase of £45 when I placed the order. I called OcUK and clarified - the additional £45 is due to Irish VAT being higher than UK VAT.

Any info on those questions above?

One more thing, on Gigabyte's website it says: "To compliment the 4K display, a colored curved point is added to front lid for personal customization."
Does this mean the colour of the curved point is customisable, or is it something else?

P.S.: There's a new review of this laptop here - http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/review/laptops/gigabyte-p35-v5-review-3634340/

Hi hagn,

yes the curved point is on the lid of the laptop and we ship with a couple of interchangable colour parts. Not major customisation, but a little touch :-)

hi hagn,

1) The refresh rate on the 4K panel is 60Hz, and this is the same as the refresh rate on the 4K output via the HDMI 2.0 connection:

2) Thunderbolt would require hardware not firmware. However we choose the HDMI 2.0 and other connections (Mini DisplayPort, D-Sub, RJ45, USB3.0 (Type-A)*3, USB3.1 (Type-C)*1) as our R&D beleive this will give more flexibility and connectivity options. We also have the added benefit of HDCP with HDMI 2.0 (not supported by Thunderbolt 3)

Hope that clarifies and we hope you enjoy your unit when it arrives on Wednesday.
