Wedding - Band or DJ?

But, going from your advice, the OP could make his own wedding cake and decorate it, take his own photos of the day instead of getting a pro.

Er... what's wrong with making your own cake? I made and decorated the cake for my mum's wedding, and by all accounts it went down rather well - I had plenty of compliments from the 120 odd people there (and none of this manky fruit cake *******!), would certainly have no qualms over making my own.

There's also no need to spend a fortune on getting a professional photographer in if you know a few people with a modicum of skill and a decent DSLR.

I swear some people just enjoy throwing away money for the sake of it ;)

Anyway, to answer the question, I'd go for a DJ, as I don't know of many bands able to play psytrance and progressive house :p

I can't stand "cheese" and pop, and if it's my wedding that I'm paying for, then I'm getting the music I want and if the guests don't like it they can **** off. :D

We used a DJ/Musician (in france). Met up with him ahead of time and discussed the type of music and if there were any requests etc. He was so seamless we didn't even notice him, including playing around the Him and Her game etc.

Weddings in france are long.. they start 1-2pm .. for the afternoon bash then by start for the evening meal with a course every 40 minutes.. in-between games etc. then at ~2am at the end of the wedding they had carnival (it's a Dunkerque thing they have each year..
). So that's a lot of music!

There's a lot of cheesy wedding DJs out there who'll do just that but there's also decent DJs out there who'll do so much more than play cheese. Ours played a wonderful selection of Motown followed by more recent music. He got everyone on the dance floor without resorting to cheese. That takes some skill, in my opinion.

if you want to play motown then you just chose to play motown...

music is normally down to what the bride and groom want - most people go for cheesy pop

Personally, and I've been to many weddings since the 60s, I always class Motown has being the 'cheese' at a wedding Disco :D

I didn't say there was anything wrong, you seem to have left out the next sentence saying "Somethings you can do yourself, some you don't and being your own DJ is a no. " Making a cake is something you can do, just like your own invites etc. You do it before the day, deliver it and the venue staff sort it out. Music, photography, videography isn't something the majority of people would want to be doing or worrying about on their own wedding day.

I've also seen the outcome of "friends with a modicum of skill", 80% of the time the photos are average. Depends how much interest you have in quality, but then some pro's aren't any better.

All the best weddings I have been to (including my own of course) have had a decent quality covers band with a playlist in between sets!

My brother in law is playing an hour long acoustic set (of stuff I like) at my wedding in a just under a fortnight. We've also hired a DJ that will play the guff my missus listens to and drop in some of the more popular rock songs I've picked out. The DJ is bringing an entire sound system, lighting, mics for speeches etc.

Best of both worlds I'm hoping, especially as the brother in law is free. :p

Edit - Oh, and all cheesy guff is banned.

I gig in 3 local Stoke bands but I would always go for a decent DJ and you tell them what playlist you want.
If you really want a band then the best local band are called The Vanz, they cater to a very wide audience.
And £400 for a DJ, £1000 for a band?
That is waaaaaay over the odds.

The Vanz look ideal for what i need.
I guess it would depend how much they charge.

Any idea their rough prices?

In a normal local pub they would charge around £250 for 90 to 105 minutes work but that's playing what they want to play so will obviously charge more for a wedding.
The lead guitarist/singer goes out in at least 4 different acts including solo, duo, trio etc doing various forms of popular music and he also plays in our local world touring rock band Demon.

I presume you've seen their web page? - http://www.thevanz.co.uk/the_vanz_band_audio.html
