Is 21:9 worth the sacrifice of 144hz and Freesync?

I recently got a 1440p, 144hz IPS Freesync.

I appreciated the 1440p, 144hz was nice and I liked Freesync but it was somehow not "fun" and the panel lottery was a joke so have sent it back so back in the hunt for a monitor.

Is 21:9 worth forgoing all of the above for 21:9? 16:9 just seems stagnant now.

I can stretch to a 1440p 21:9 but a 1080p would be easier on the wallet.

My initial thinking is that a 1080p would be limiting. I am coming from 1680 x 1050 though so anything is an "upgrade".

Thanks for any help.

I recently purchased a 21.9. Love it (AOC U3477PQU) I don't need 144 htz or g/freesync so 60htz suits me fine (I notice what more megahertz shows me as I do gsync but it doesn't bother me).

My advice although not at all practical is to try one. I still focus on the middle of any screen and yes I can see the peripheral extra but the 21.9 doesn't seem to give me as much buzz as going from 5:4 to 16.9 did.

It's, possible coming from a big 32" VA 1440p 16.9 to a thinner 34" 21.9 has made the adjustment to me odd but it's taking its sweet time for me to get to grips with it. . Luckily I can afford both. Some say do it and don't look back but you'll need 1440p at least with 21.9 aka 34 inch screen. Curve no matter how small annoys me so go with extreme caution .

You can get Freesync with 21:9 1440P, if you can afford it, with the Acer XR34.

1080P would indeed be limiting, and by the sounds of it you've had a brief taste of 1440P, so you may already find it hard to go back. It really is so much better an experience, for gaming and general desktop use, productivity etc. I could never go back now myself.

I would actually argue monitors across the board are stagnant now though, and that is because Display Port 1.2 is maxed out, with Pascal (and AMD's equivalent) set to finally bring DP 1.3 to the table, which will open up the market for some new and potentially very exciting monitor tech... 21:9 1440P 144Hz monitor, no problem! 4K @ 120Hz... yup! BLB free monitors? Well, let's not get too ahead of ourselves, but we can dream! ;)

When you look at what's available NOW, even with the likes of the Acer X34 G-Sync, one of the most expensive monitors you can buy, it is using a relatively old panel overclocked to within an inch of its life. This is NOT the future... it's the past, rehashed and cleverly marketed! Just food for thought anyway... may actually be worth holding out, but if you must scratch that itch to buy, then the XR34 would be a good choice if you can stretch to it, as even though it is using the same panel as the X34, it is quite a bit cheaper thanks to Freesync not the expensive G-Sync being utilised.

:)

IMO no I currently have the Dell U2913wm (2560x1080) beside the original ROG Swift and while the 21:9 is nice it is no substitute for G-Sync and higher Hz for gaming, 1440p 21:9 would add a bit more but still lacking. Even for desktop use where it makes up more ground it still doesn't make parity for me personally but its very useful to have for some uses including movies that are properly formatted for the aspect ratio.

The Dell is a great monitor though - with native support for ~80Hz and freesync or g-sync it would be a serious bit of kit.

As the owner of an Asus Swift and a Acer X34 I'd rate the various attributes in order of priority as follows

1440p rather than 1080p
Adaptive Sync
21:9
144hz

For the games I play such as ESO, Witcher 3, Fallout 4 60hz is fine but if I was a big FPS player I'd rate 144hz higher in the ranking.

videos showing 21:9 and 4K and the advantages of Ultra Wide over 4K and the gains you get.

They are good videos for people that were thinking what monitor to go for and what graphics card and the benefits and disadvantages of each. I also totally agreed with their findings on that and was very well explained.

Tempted to get a 1080p 21:9 AND the AOC 24" 144hz Freesync 1080p.

Costs the same as a single 16:9 1440p 144hz Freesync but without the panel lottery?

What is the height of the screens (not casings) on the 1080p 21:9 for comparison?

I am worried they be too narrow?

I have a couple of lg 29" monitors and as far as I remember from side to side they are 27" ...but I cant remember what they are from top to bottom sorry

A 29" 21:9 is the same size (vertically) as a 23" 16:9.
A 34" 21:9 is the same size (vertically) as a 27" 16:9.

Obviously the pixel density of a 1440p monitor @ 23" will be higher than that of a 29" 1080p 21:9 monitor.

Code:
Stats 27 inch 16x9 34 inch 21x9
Width 23.53 inches 31.25 inches
Height 13.24 inches 13.39 inches

Stats 23 inch 16x9 29 inch 21x9
Width 20.05 inches 26.66 inches
Height 11.28 inches 11.42 inches

You will be happier with a single 3440x1440 34 inch monitor mate. The AOC U3477PQU 34" 3440x1440 IPS WideScreen Super-Wide LED Monitor is fantastic and I had a Dell 34" curved and didn't like the curve and the strange effects it produced so sent it back and got the AOC 34" flat screen, coming from a dual monitor setup to now a single monitor at 34" 3440x1440. Won't be going back to 16:9/16:10 ever again or dual setups or curved screens.

You can get the AOC currently for £500 if you shop arround.

Also OCUK clearance B grade have one today for £300, get it quick as most that sent them back had nothing wrong with them.

I can pull the trigger on the AOC for £450.

Just not sure how much I would miss Freesync since having a taste.

Shame I missed out on the B-Grade.

For £300, I would have taken a punt.

Personally I'd actively avoid 21:9 as I'm not really a fan of widescreen. Can't see myself buying a new monitor any time soon but top priority will be refresh rate
