Is it unreasonable to expect good results from a body shop that may never have sprayed motorcycle fairings before?

The results are less than desirable. Lines in the finish almost as if the wrong grit paper was used or wrong grit rubbing compound still shiny though with a good reflection, a couple runs not tidied up although in inconspicous areas you wouldnt see unless you really look. There are a few bubbly patches too. And on one panel they havent painted to the edge/ sanded too much back by a mm or 2 in places. They used 1k instead of 2k paint as they couldnt get the 2k to stick. They told me the panels were ready for collection. The paint however is still soft after 4 days now (can dig my nails in). I tried to apply a vinyl decal, i pulled the decal back to get an air bubble out and it has lifted a huge strip of paint off. Was this me being a numpty or just a bad paint job? Was i meant to leave the panels longer than the 2 days they told me?

All in all i paid 159 for three panels, for that price is this the work i should expect or shall i ask for a refund/discount.. i dont want my panels painted there again.

How big are the panels? I'd ask for a refund and then go somewhere else that know what they're doing.

In all seriousness, pictures would help if you can provide them.

From what you say it would seem that there is an issue. even cellulose paint would be reasonably hard after 4 days (Perhaps not in this weather) I would not expect modern paints to have a problem "unless" there was a problem (IYSWIM)

(Oh, PS that bit about paint not sticking. Have you ever used silicone based polish on the fairing in the past?)

These are the size of two of the panels the third is the same size as the smaller in this picture

That should be irrelevant, a professional bodyshop should correctly prep the panels to remove all contaminants and apply any specific primers or adhesion promoters as required.

1k is acrylic based paint and is an air drying (solvent based) paint. This means drying time is greatly influenced by temperature and humidity and could take weeks to fully harden. They should have made the OP aware of this.

Finish doesn't look great tbh, not well prepped and quite a lot of orange peel on the clearcoat. I've done better than that at home.

Paint finish from the picture is a disaster area! No question. whether or not paint compatibility might be a problem, the scratches and orange peel are horrible. It should never have left the shop like that

If there was a paint compatibility issue it should have been talked about

This was some time ago,(I did a sort of course on car restoration back in the 80's) But my understanding is that silicone is basically impossible to remove. You can only get away with the problems that it causes by by adding silicone to the paint. That, of course, will contaminate the paint booth so very few people will be willing to do this.

Silicone contamination is an issue for finishers, (unless more recent developments have stopped it from being an issue), one really should not use silicone polishes on ones motors.

Not entirely happy with any off them. The finish is at best ok but there are fine scratches all over. I took the worst panel over and explained to the sprayer i wasnt happy and he told me a woeful story of how hard he struggled to get what he did and he cant understand why it hasnt worked. He has taken the panel and will try get it sprayed in 2k. If succesful i will get hom to do the other panels too. If not then i will see his boss who is back on saturday to sort something out.

Trying to fob you off with a sob story. Amazing. Those look awful in the pics, and a picture never tells the story. They probably look 2x worse in the flesh.

I've always found that pictures actually makes it look much worse than it really is, that's not to take away from the OPs problems as the paint job is truly shoking.
