so Im planning on building a new machine.

my oldest son is more of a ps4 gamer but wants to put videos on to you tube..

so the wife's suggested I build a pc for him.

so my thoughts.. as Im more into my PC gaming could this be an excuse to upgrade to an i7 and giving the lad my 4690k and board.

my thoughts is he wouldn't need a top end GPU so I could stick in a 2nd hand 7950 or the likes in there and I could still use my 970 for a while.

so Im looking at a basic CPU, Motherboard and Ram ideas.. my 2 options would be as follows.
so this would be on a budget.. so my thoughts are.. is skylake worth the extra?

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £524.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Go for Skylake, and maybe look at a 2x8GB ram kit instead of 4x4.
also if you do go haswell, think of it this way, next time you want to make an upgrade, you'll have to upgrade RAM as well. If you go Skylake you might bypass RAM.

I'd agree: go 1151.

For £50 you'll get a little extra performance now, along with the fact that DDR3 is going to start climbing in price while DDR4 will fall, so upgrading RAM later will be easier on 1151. Similarly 1150 processors should be falling by the wayside, so 1151 will give you the option of upgrades there later.

In short, the motherboard should last you through an entire upgrade if you go 1151, and it'll be a bit faster now.

Personally i wouldn't go either, i would pay a bit extra and use 5820k.

That's an extra £60 on top of the extra £50... you've put the price up over 25% compared to the 1150 the OP was originally looking at. And frankly, it's not that much faster unless you're doing a lot of video encoding.

I got a 5820k, but only because I got a good deal on a brand new second hand one and saved myself £100. Otherwise, Skylake is the "sensible" price point right now.

Do you have a cpu cooler ? As you don't get a stock heatsink with Skylake 'K' cpu's.

The oem i7 6700K is currently cheaper. All you lose is the extra 2 yr warranty, but cpu's very rarely fail.

Also if you only plan on running a single gpu then you could opt for a cheaper board such as the MSI Z170-A PRO for £82.99. It supports CF but not SLI.

for the sake of £20 an an extra 2 years peace of mind I would rather buy the retail version.
I had an FX8350 fail on me a few weeks before the 3 year warranty ran out on it.. AMD replaced it so I wouldnt like to take the chance on a years warranty over 3 years warranty for the sake of £20

as for SLI Ive currently got the gtx970 and to be honest further down the line I would like the option of either dropping in a second 970 or maybe picking up a matching pair of 980's so I like the idea of having that option there if I was to go for a board that didint support it then get a chance of a matching 970 or a pair of 980' I would be kicking my self.

ive got the Phanteks PH-TC14PE cooler I would move with me and I would use either an evo 212 or similar on the 4690k for my lad but I still have the stock cooler that I could use to get it running.
I cant see him needing it to run anything over stock at present. unless he ditches the ps4 and joins the PC brigade but sadly I dont see that happening.

Is this Motherboard not for your Son's system ? I read it that you were putting the 7970 in here.
no plan would be ill get an upgrade and my son will get my 4690k.
as I say it wont be used for gaming mainly video capture from his ps4 and then putting videos on youtube..

also wondered.. for gaming would the i5 6600k cope rather than spending the extra on the i7 6700k?

Yes it would cope fine. The i7 would be more useful if you were doing other things like video editing/rendering etc. Plus you can always upgrade the cpu in the future.
