1920x1080 on a 2560x1440 monitor - same quality as a native 1920x1080 monitor?

Hello all,

I'm thinking of going for the BenQ BL3200PT 32" monitor.

The question I would like to ask is, if I run 1920x1080 resolution games and media (such as videos) on a 2560x1440 monitor WITHOUT the forced stretching or filtering (basically using only 1920x1080 pixels with the black borders), will the quality of the graphics be the same as running it on a native 1920x1080 monitor?

Or is there still a reduction in quality?

No, it's basically running at 'native' resolution, but you'll have black bars at the side where the pixels aren't being used.
 
On my Dell I can run it without scaling 1:1 pixel mapped but no guarantees - another panel could have a silly scaler setup that forced it through image processing :S (though I've not heard of any 21:9 that do that).

That's what I'm worried about. I also read about the pixel density on larger 2560x1440 screens which can cause lower-quality or 'unclean' 1920x1080 unfiltered/un-scaled output?

Anyway if anyone knows for sure on whether the BenQ BL3200PT (or any other 2560x1440 monitor for that matter) can output a pure/clean 1920x1080 resolution or not then it would most appreciated if you can offer your input.

I'm happy to confirm the BL3200PT will do that no problem, I've just tired it on mine. Quality is every bit as good as running native at 2560x1440 as there's there's no extra processing going on. You just have to select '1:1' scaling in the Picture Advanced/Display Mode section of the OSD.

Also I would like to ask, would the Radeon R9 380 or Nvidia GTX 960 be suitable enough to power a 2560x1440 monitor sufficiently?

I will be mostly watching videos, browsing Internet and working with high-resolution images. And occasionally some light gaming on all sorts of games, where I'm not too concerned on perfect framerates, perfect graphic quality, etc.

Again any help will be most appreciated.
 
Those GPUs would have no difficulties at all with that resolution - aslong as they have the appropriate outputs - though I currently have my Dell 21:9 hooked upto my tablet via mini HDMI and its doing 2560x1080 perfectly fine so it shouldn't be an issue.

For gaming you might have to turn down the odd detail (lower levels of AA or use FXAA and same with ambient occlusion) but again shouldn't be a problem.
 
If you have an NVIDIA GPU, you can set this up in the NVCP to let the GPU do the scaling, so it'll send a 2560x1440 signal to the monitor but with only the 1920x1080 data in the middle and black bars around the edge (or stretched to fill)

Been a while since I had an AMD gpu so not sure if they have the same options

So I would like to ask - is DisplayPort considered the best possible way of connection between graphics cards and monitors in these current times?
