Car recommendations for £2K~

£500 - £600 sounds like a LOT. Unless it's a dealer and they are charging extortionate hourly rate. Get an itemised quotation from them which you can compare, rather than just a plucked out of the air figure.

Are they not drums on the back?

My wife has a 2004 focus and the spring snapped a few weeks back. Get another from the scrap yard for £25 and the carage fitted it for £30.

The other bits can't be that much to fix. I wouldn't scrap it. You will ge t around £50 for it. Just sell it on Facebook for £200 as it is if your not going to fix it

They are drums on the back. You can get a new set of drums and shoes for £50 on eBay.

Really? £25 from a scrap yard? Seems very steep considering it's second hand.

Can get a new one for £23.68 (Sachs, Anschler is cheaper at £17 something) from ECP for his Focus.

Nothing there sounds like it should be anywhere near £500 to fix. Source the parts yourself and get a local indy to fit them and re-mot.

£2k isn't enough budget to get a much better motor as said. Obviously you just want a new motor though, but your car will be worthless without an MOT and worth at least what it would cost to put through an MOT if it has a full years MOT, and will sell a LOT faster.

The best option is still for OP to fix his damn car... :p

Or admit that he just wants a new one! And is using the fact that it needs a couple of bulbs, a spring, and a brake adjustment as a poor excuse for getting one. :D

Its one step up from buying a new car because your tires have low tread.

Assuming that the OP wants a new car then what would people recommend?

Looking at 2k cars with similar requirements myself so might as well tag on to this thread. Renault Megan looked like a cheap runaround but hear they have electrical gremlins (French car so kinda expected I guess).
