***ing Mondays - Can this tyre be plugged?

No, just get it done properly with a rubber patch and some heat in a tyre fitting place. It wont cost much.

Just called a tyre repair specialist, sent him a picture, waiting to hear back. Hopefully he can sort, I asked about the mushroom cap fix and he said that's what he will do and pretty much echoed what you guys have said about the plugging fix.

£30 would be MUCH more welcome than £130.

It's just within the repairable area I'd say, I think the other place just wanted to sell you a tyre so they could plug it themselves and sell it on as a part worn.

Booked, got a specialist to come out to my home on Wednesday, if he can fix, £30. If not, he won't charge.

I've only ever seen places repair tyre punctures with the pipe cleaner type plugs as in above kit? I've seen many part worn tyres come with these plugs and additionally have driven cars (hard) with tyres repaired this way.

I have had new tyres fitted at work, but have to take the old ones to a skip at another place of work so get chance to inspect and the repairs.
They did have a mushroom inside as what happens is the tool pushes a couple of inches of sticky pipe cleaner through (lubricated by rubber glue) and then you twist and withdraw the tool, it gathers up the pipe cleaner wire and fibres and glue on the inside into a mushroom. The sticky stuff then cures. They can't be pulled out with pliars, but if you are not happy with it - get someone else to do it, nothing worse than having a doubt in your mind and negative energy will attract a failure. I wouldn't do it to someone else's tyre though.

In that case you now know to avoid those places like the plague, they are a temporary repair only and designed for an emergency roadside repair (since you don't have to remove the tyre). I find it hard to believe a professional tyre shop would use these on tyres in the shop; even ignoring the fact that it's a temporary repair they are hard work to use compared to the mushrooms and more prone to leaking.

The correct type of plug looks like this, and is inserted and bonded from the inside of the tyre so there is no way it can come out.

The brown string is effective as a get you home solution, provided you have a way of re-inflating the tyre. I carry a kit on my bike with some CO2 bulbs to re-inflate the tyre, but I wouldn't consider using the tyre on a permanent basis if I'd used it.

Interesting to know, as I always thought it was safe and have never heard anyone say otherwise. I'll note that though :)

RAC used the same method when I had a flat and needed to get to KwikFit to have the tyre changed. He was adamant I let the car stand and let the repair set properly, not to exceed a certain speed limit and also to only drive a short distance.

Sounds like you need to change where you have your tyres repaired.

I've seen a few garages do it to be honest, but at least I know now for future!

Afternoon all, just had a chap called Dean visit and repair the tyre (properly, had the tyre off, fitted mushroom cap on the inside after cleaning the tyre up etc etc. Balanced the wheel after the work and was a all round nice guy.

£30!!!

Here is his site: www.jordansautocare.co.uk, he does servicing, tyre replacement/repair, brakes etc, all mobile.

Will be keeping that business card for future use!

Although my advice was slightly off with saying it could be plugged, I am glad we saved you £100 in having to buy a new tyre. It just shows though how much some garages would rip you off. They'd have probably fixed the tyre and sold it on privately to score some cash..
