Having issues getting my Xbox One to have an 'Open' NAT Type. I have forwarded the correct ports, but im still getting a 'Moderate' NAT Type. My network setup in my house is as follows....

Virgin Media SH2 (Modem Mode)
Linksys EA9600 (for wirless)
Connected to the Linksys via ethernet cable is a ASUS RT-N56U router (Access Point Mode)

The Asus router is placedown starts and is basically used as a range extender.

I have used the program PFPortChecker by Portforward.com to test the ports ive opened on my Linksys and every port i put into that program to test comes back with 'Your Port is NOT OPEN or not reachable'

Any ideas why even though i have opened these ports PFPOrtChecker is saying there still not open?

Thanks for the heads up but UPnP is enabled and still i get a 'Moderate' NAT

I have notice on the ASUS router which im using as a range extender downstairs as Access Point mode. When you enable Access Point mode is states the following....

"RT-N56U connects to external Wired/Wireless router to establish Wireless signal sharing. In this mode, NAT, Firewall and UPnP services are unavailable. The WAN port is direct connected to LAN ports."

This Asus router wouldnt be able to interfere with my Linksys router would it??, i mean the xbox is connected via Ethernet cable to the Linksys router not the ASUS, but thought id mention it??

In that case are you able to set your Access point on a DMZ? I had to do this with a different router with a similar setup to you. Don't worry as your access point should still have a firewall etc so your still protected. Could be the case that your double natted?

Hmm think ive sorted it.

Under the main UPnP setting (which was enabled) were 2 other options...

Allow users to configure
Allow users to disable Internet access

I enabled both of them and i got an OPEN NAT.

Not exactly sure what those 2 options do however!?

Router options are great...

  • There's no real consistency between manufacturers (or sometimes even models from the same manufacturer).
  • They usually don't bother to document most of the options.
  • If there is any documentation it'll be so vague that it's virtually useless, or so technical that it still doesn't make any sense. It's almost as bad as the BIOS section in most motherboard manuals.
It's one of the joys of using routers targeted at the domestic and SME market. Luckily most of the time you can just leave most options at their default values.

UPnP allows devices to specify to the router what ports they need open and should be forwarded to them.
Allow users configure allows literally that, upnp users (devices) dictate the ports they need.
Allow users to disable internet access, if a device so wanted it could block all ports or have all ports forwarded to it blocking the Internet access to everything else.

Moderate isn't too much to worry about and it won't hold you back.
