Upgrading 970 SLI to 980ti (or sidestepping...)

I've got the urge to move to a single gpu solution. With Arkham knight, fallout 4 and now the latest tomb raider all being nvidia titles with SLI issues (and games I eagerly awaited the release for), I think I'm ready to transition to a less stressful configuration.

Raw numbers I don't think there's a lot in it, but gaming at 1440 is starting to get near or exceed the 4gb (3.5) mark in some titles (gta 5 being a prime example). I can see some games have a performance advantage over sli due to poor implementation.

Anyone else had a similar journey? I'm thinking the Asus Strix variant. Is this a good choice and would it fit in my antec 1200?

Launching Fallout 4 normally gives me poor performance but when I launch it through nVidia GeForce Experience then SLI works just fine and my frame rate doubles. For some unknown reason.
 
Admittedly fallout 4 seems to have improved with SLI since patching. It's the hassle of sli issues on launch with a lot of big games that has worn me down.
 
I went 970 SLI to single 980Ti - I don't regret it for one min. With the way my 980Ti clocks, there is only few % in perf as well on games where SLI worked flawlessly in (which was rare in my experience).
 
After following some auctions for my particular card model, it seems I can expect to get around £200 each for my two. So I'd need to put about £150 (depending on model I go for).

Everytime I talk myself out of it, I talk myself into it. I've been reading that a single gpu delivers a much smoother experience overall. Anyone able to vouch for that?

I will definitely be upgrading to pascal regardless so with that in mind, should I just hold off?

Just hold off if you want to upgrade to Pascal. I appreciate the issues you may have with sli on new title launches but this is a more of a side-ward/downward move. Any titles with a reasonable sli profile will give you better fps on a 970 sli setup compared to 980ti. No point spending extra for 980ti now if you want to buy Pascal going forward.
 
Thanks - my logical side is telling me that's the best option too.

Might just fill my hardware craving in the meantime and finally upgrade to an Ssd.

Yes SSD is a must. With all this fancy hardware, your mechanical HDDs hold you back. And SSDs are going quite cheap now so you must pick one up :)
 
Stick with the SLI and wait for the next GPUs unless of course you have the cash to sidestep and then upgrade afterwards.
