Has anyone withdrawn their child from collective worship?

They are values that are at the core of Christianity though, which doesn't make them solely Christian but makes them Christian values.

Fair enough if it wasn't meant that way, but quite often people use the phrase "<insert religion here> values" in a derogatory sense, meaning that people who aren't of that religion are somehow incapable of holding those same values and are therefore inferior

I was pretty much forced to go to church until i was 16 at which point my parents said i could choose to go or not, i didn't. Went to a Methodist secondary school but it wasn't full on religious, but i had to do RE GCSE which i'd rather have as it shows a bit of understanding of other faiths. At this point i'm not religious. :p

Love a militant atheist who sends a kid to a religious school lol

Loads of schools push religion but are not actually a "religious school" as such.

Not exactly a huge choice either, either the ****** school on the estate, another c of e school or God forbid, a Catholic school.

My daughter recently had a religious studies test. When she told me she came bottom of the class I was so proud of her :)

Why would you be proud that your daughter is ignorant of something that is of great historical influence and importance and of huge significance to billions of people worldwide?

Why is a catholic school any worse?

Just different flavours of the same cake with all the same calories.

My Catholic school was great, it depends on the teachers there.

Probably because it shows shes knows not to pay any attention and instead concentrate on subjects that matter.
I will be withdrawing my children from said subjects they can go to the library and study maths or science instead of wasting time learning about historical disillusions. IMO it should not be something that's done in schools, its what sunday school is for.

Er... no. Sunday school is to teach kids how to be Christian, R.E. is to teach children about the various religions, their history, and how they've shaped the modern world.

On the former, I agree with you - a religious education should not trump a practical one.

On the latter, I think it's important that people learn about their history and culture, and why the world we live in is the way it is, whether or not you/they choose to believe in it.

Do you feel it would be ethical to allow a devoutly religious parent to prevent their child from attending biology classes where evolution is taught?

What about catholic parents removing children from lessons involving contraception etc.?

This has happened in our school.

Definitely not, evolution is fact not fiction.

I really struggle to understand it all i really do i just don't get how so many really believe in a god and why in a modern world people aren't sent to the padded cells for said belief. Anyway i could go on an on but i wont it never ends well on here.

To the subject at hand i don't want my kids to have anything to do with religion, i'm a person of science if you cant prove it i don't believe it.

That's just idiotic. I went to catholic secondary school and we had surprisingly good (with hindsight) sex education. Biological, emotional and all contraception methods and nobody was excluded by parents or anything.

Shouldn't be allowed IMO

Agreed, fact should be compulsory, e.g:

- Hindu's believe that there is an elephant headed god with four arms.
- Muslim's fast during Ramadan.
- Condoms reduce the chance of pregnancy.

Anything not black and white (such as the clap trap our rector comes out with!) should be fully optional.

Atheist here - Got no problem with my daughter getting the whole shebang at my local primary, she can make up her own mind if she wants to be religious - just as my catholic parents did with me.

Just as I hate seeing people force their kids to be religious, I don't see why I have a right to force her not to be. Plus there are a few moral lessons to be learnt from it AND the nativity play was a lot of fun for her. I don't see the harm to be honest as it's getting her into discussions with us about religion.

.

Pretty much this. Great advice.

Same and same.

genesis 38.

I struggle to take a book seriously that makes the people on an episode of Jeremy kyle look like well adjusted, only moderately incestuous, human beings.

seriously go read that chapter.

We need a new "religion" that tells children that they were born out of the universe and not into it. It should incorporate evolutionary science but also a level of mysticism about the things we do not yet know. It should spark their imagination make them want to find answers and empower them....we are all a little part of the universe given the amazing opportunity to look back in wonder at it's self.

Children should be asked to take responsibility for their own actions not feel there is a horrendous invisible Demiurge controlling matters.

Why in today's society you wouldn't want to equip your daughter with a knowledge and understanding of key social issues of the day is beyond me.

Ignorance breeds ignorance I guess...

Mostly because in this area the catholic school appears to be the "most" religious, the average school week had lots and lots of worship/RE. Some parents jump through all sorts of hoops to get into the school, faking belief/attending church etc, cant be dealing with those scroats.

Salsa, reminds me of people being proud when they "can't do math".

A basic understanding of the various religions helps a lot, there are moral messages buried in them even if like me you aren't religious and have no real interest in it as doctrine.
