A friend at work gave me about 50m of cable an old house mate left him. he doesnt know what Cat cable it is and its not in a box or anything, im about to put in a few runs (5m in length) of cable in my house so he gave it me to save me buying some.

the only details written on the side of it is 4 pair system cable.

would it be any good?

how would i know if its cat 5e?

Have another look on the side of the cable, it will usually give a verified/certified to 'CAT 5E' or similar on it but it may be further along the run.

Sorry for lack of info but that's basically what it is.

First picture showing the 4 X twisted pairs.

Second picture shows the only writing on the cable. 24awg 4pair utp system cable. The number I assume is what mtr it's at as that changes along the cable

Hard to tell if it's 5 or 5e but chances are it's 5e. For shorter runs including your 5 metre ones then even cat 5 would be fine for gigabit speeds anyway.

That's cat 5e. I can tell from the twists, and from having seen many a cat 5e in my time.

Cheers chaps. Is there anyway I can tell for sure? Ie putting some plugs on the ends and transferring a file? Or plugging in PC and seeing connection speed? Are they good enough tests?

If you did that in the first place you wouldn't have had to start a thread lol.
