AMD Pure Hair comes at a very low performance hit - Great stuff

Do you not find it odd how it was going to be an amd sponsored game up until the last month or 2 and now no mention of amd at all, just nvidia... I would find it very hard to believe that amd didn't have some form of a contract so something must have happened but we will never know exactly what.

Who said it was going to be an AMD sponsored game?

Hbao+ also ran very well in the division beta.

Ah fair enough, I thought I saw a few people in here posting about that.

Of course there will be a contract of some kind although companies can always get out of contracts if one or more of the T&C's weren't adhered to by said companies or if both parties agreed to revoke the contract.

I find it odd how if it was an AMD sponsored game(Presumed some form of contract) that it then became an Nvidia sponsored game. It would suggest to me that AMD either never took an option/defaulted on something or it was never actually a AMD sponsored game. One of life's mysteries :)

It probably was never an AMD sponsored game. The link was TressFx/Purehair and people probably just assumed it would be AMD sponsored including me. If Nvidia never came in with money AMD might well have got some free publicity due to helping out with PureHair but with Nvidia spending some money they would never get this.

As big as the Tomb Raider name is the sales disappointed in the 2013 game and so far the sales on this one are not great either. It's to early to tell how good the PC sales are going to be but for AMD it might not be worth splashing out on, knowing they are so tight on budget. I think they are keeping money for DX12 titles which should have more publicity. They could try and nail on some decent games for the Polaris launch as they lost the 28nm Gen with some bad launch decisions.

Was there any official new that AMD were sponsoring the game, more that nvidia is now? People always think that when a nvidia logo appears or nvidia technology is added nvidia are directly paying for it, but that is rarely the case. Nvidia have a much more proactive developer program and go out of their way to support more developers and games.
Take project CARS, developers approached both AMD and Nvidia for help, only nvidia responded and gave some technology and optimizations. The developers had to ask nvidia for permission to add the nvidia logo as an advertising billboard in-games, no money changed hands. AMD weren't to be seen until it as too late and their only response was a load of dirty PR tricks and outright lies they were forced to retract.

Makes sense.

Well least on my system I can call them results junk :)

AF I have seen 10 to 15 fps increase going from 16x to 2x not sure why.

That's really strange. I don't think I have ever seen a AF give a big hit in terms of frames, its one of those settings where it hardly hits performance. I would suggest there is something a miss on your end, maybe try it again mate. :)

On Nvidia cards, yes. However, this is not the case on my 390X. I have reported this to AMD in case it's a driver bug and is not due to AMD cards using much higher quality texture filtering than Nvidia ones or being less efficient at doing Anisotropic Filtering in newer games.

I tested GTA 5 as well and there is a significant performance hit when going above 4xAF, although not as big as with Rise of the Tomb Raider.

It is kind of comical that a game using a variant of TressFX gives no mention to AMD and AMD don't give any mention either :D

I just think AMD are so destitute that they can't afford to sponsor any games at the mo and need to get back to making some profit. The belt buckle is on the last notch.

As for 2013 sales, I remember reading a year on after the 2013 launch that they had covered all the expenses and anything there after was profit. No idea if that is good or bad but both the TR games are awesome and deserve a buy.

Edit:

Not sure where you got your info about the TR 2013 game as they far exceeded their profit expectations

What makes you say ROTTR sales are not great either or is that just you guessing?

I have not played the new one but was very impressed by the old game. Both are great games by the looks of it but while reading up about ROTTR it constantly crops up that Square were not happy with how the original sold. ROTTR is most likely suffering due to not being out on the PS4 and releasing at the same time as Fallout 4.

I just think AMD are placing all there eggs in Polaris and Zen as this round is lost. AMD arguably have a better line up of cards on the market apart from the 980ti up so should not take any more damage until Polaris hits. It makes sense to survive until you have a new product out and spend big here.

They expected nearly double the sales.

I am not guessing, it is selling slower than the original. They are defending the slow sales though by harping on about how good the game is.

I think it increasingly looks like CD worked with AMD on the original TressFX and has an agreement to keep source code and joint IP. CD has spent the last year's improving their hair simulation that they call PureHair, largely on their own.

CD now don't feel like AMD deserve a specific mention because the current version is so far removed. AMD don't have the legal right to market PureHair as an AMD technology. It is a much simpler and more logival.explanation than claiming AMD are so retarded with their marketing they cant mention PureHair on their GPU open webpage etc.

Damn that is surprising. Hopefully it will get sorted soon enough.

Just done a quick test on Anisotropic filtering performance! The place am in atm isn't the best place too really test for this so latter i'll do a better test.

Now in AMD driver texture filtering by default is on standard

AF 16x

AF 2x
ROTTR_03_02_2016_01_05_15_PM_706.png

Now I jumped into game real fast to test what happens if I select performance for texture filtering and the difference was much lower 16x I seen 56fps and 2x I seen 54fps

Well like I said, I did remember reading that they had made profit after a year of sales so looked it up and they had actually exceeded sales expectations, so maybe it was a slow uptake. ROTTR is top of the sales on Steam but there isn't much to take from that with nothing else competing but it was well worth my £25 notes and it is the best looking game I have played (The Division is slightly better but Beta so doesn't count) and some decent gameplay to boot.

In the entertainment business a lot of things make profit but get canned as more profit was expected from the efforts put in. I edited my last post to show you how slow the new game was selling in comparison. The games being good is not in dispute and the 2013 game was released again on the next gen consoles which gave it a nice boost.

The Tomb Raider reboot has produced 2 brilliant games it's just a shame it's been dragged into the gutter by the branding politics.

To be honest I don't think this one looks that much better than 2013, The hair not cutting through her neck is one improvement but other than that is it really that much better looking? I don't think so.
The cut scenes are nice yeah but actual running around gameplay not much different from what I recall.

Games in general are not improving as fast as they used to. So while this one looks better it won't be a night and day scenario like we used to get 10 years back.

The game getting dragged into the gutter is only certain people and from what I am reading, they don't have it either, so meh!!!

As for looks, I fired up the 2013 and jumped to several campsites and it still looks fantastic with everything on but the latest TR just knocks spots off it when you look closer at the 2 games. I look forward to playing this ROTTR again and in stereoscopic 3D as well.

Nothing i said was not backed up by information so having the game or not does not change what i said. Anyhow what i said about the game was in fact not really about the game and more about sales so having the game would not matter at all to what i was discussing. I guess my opinion on sales would somehow change if i owned the game :D:D:D.

This you have to own something to have an opinion is just daft any how. I could go and read all there was to know about a game and study video's and would know more than most who actually bought it.

If it helps i will be getting this game at some point in the future but atm i am to busy playing other games so have no time for this atm.
