Motherboard not posting/booting

Are those hx PSUs OK ??

Yeh after lots of research its highly unlikely its faulty and its just not compatiable with my old dell board as ive seen 2 other detailed threads saying the exact same thing where they tried to put new psu's in a dell studio 540, the threads are a few years old and even then the people had to buy older psu's so im well out of luck trying to get it to work with mine.

So ive come to the conclusion that im better off buying a new skylake startup platform and using it on that as i do really want it as part of my new system and im not going to let what happened to me scare me off, plus ive still a year from Scan and 7 from corsair so IF it does happen to be faulty and not work on the z170 board i know what to do.
Thanks

I think that's a wise choice. I didn't suggest it as I thought you weren't ready for that yet and I know how expensive it is to buy a whole new base these days. If you were tempted by either of the 8 Pack i3/i5 overclock bundles I wouldn't touch them right now. Intel has started forcing motherboard manufacturers to release bios updates to put a stop to the bclk overclocking method. See this article. Asrock released updates yesterday to stop it although it will only be stopped at the moment if the user applies the bios update. The interesting thing in that article is that a microcode update can be applied through Windows update and the way that Windows 10 updates means that people who bought these bundles or specific boards to do bclk overclocking will suddenly find that they can no longer overclock.

To be honest, if the psu does turn out to be faulty with the new board I would probably go through Corsair as it may be a lot less hassle dealing with them.

Ah yes i heard about these mobos that let you overclock the base clock but i heard sometimes its not that easy and can give u headaches but tbh im not planning on overclocking the i3 (even going to use the stock cooler) as its literally just a decent cpu to tide me over until i can afford the unlocked 6700k and a h110i gtx to boot.

If the psu does fail i will go through corsair anyway no doubt as i heard nothing but good things about their rma's.

Any good reccomendations for a mobo, i was liking the asus z170 pro, maximus viii ranger, gb z170x gaming5 or the msi z170a gaming5?
All are at the top end of my budget but i should get best mobo i can as i doubt i will ever change it out for a while.

Thanks

I like Asus boards as they just work plus they have a excellent bios layout. Gigabyte has better RMA service though should anything go wrong. Saying that I have never had a Asus board fail on me. To be honest there is no need to spend a fortune on a board anymore. One costing £100-120 will do 99% of what one costing two or three times as much can. Don't forget you will need DDR4 as well.

If it was me I would probably go for either of these:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £250.08
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Either of those plus a i3 6100 is going to be around £235 and it's not that far off the Gigabyte plus i5 6600k bundle. Maybe it's stretching too far but if it's main use is gaming then the i5 is more than enough.

Total: £319.48
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Yeh your right, from what i understand they all pretty much offer the same basic specs (16x, m.2, sata 6gb, usb 3.1 etc) and the more expensive boards offer more extra features that you may not use and are more overclockable but for around that price i like the 2 you posted and i will continue to look but i an swinging towards asus as i prefer the look of some of their boards and the nice bios/software. Cheers

Don't get hung up on the "more overclockable" bit either as it's mostly down to the cpu these days. I believe that the i5/i7 k series cpu's no longer come with a cooler either.

Yeh i guess its just a point of sale for the manuf and i guess that makes sense as if your spending that much on a cpu you would at least have a decent cooler too. I was thinking of putting in that little extra and gettin what you have as i heard nothing but great things about the hero and rog boards. Specs aside i think the board looks great too, a lot better than pro gaming etc
