Hi,

Anyone running a r380 on cx430 psu? Or will I be cutting it fine. Is it worth giving it a try? If its not possible I'll have to upgrade my psu, then I might aswell get a better spec videocard. Just though I'd be be smart and wait till pascal release.

Quick google, it looks like it aint going to work.... cx430's got 1 pci e 6/8, and I'll need two pcie 6's... unless I use a splitter??? But would that work?????

Cheers

I'll go for a gtx 960 instead, as it only requires one 6pin. That'll keep me going for another few months. Phew....

You get a molex to PCE-e splitter with many cards. I have a similar dilemma (with the CX430 PSU), but it's more down to total available power rather than connections perhaps.

The CX430 is a poor quality psu and depending on which version you have either has only 336w or 384w on the 12v rail. Go for the 960 as it's much more power efficient than the 380 and should be ok with your psu.

Seems like the KFA2 Reference card is on sale, should I get it? or am I better to get one with aftermarket cooler?

tbf nvidia reference coolers are not too loud at all, my 780ti runs very quiet when under load, so low heat out put gpu should be fine as long as your not overworking the gpu.

what games do you intend to play and at what res

The 960 cooler looks like a replica reference cooler, so may not be as quiet as the real thing.

That being said i would get the 960 as it's a good price.

Also consider getting a better PSU.

Well therere quite a few components I need to change in the system. I was just hoping to spend maybe 300-350 quid on videocard and 27" 1080p Screen to see me through till pascal's released. I want to get as much juice that my current PSU can handle ( I realise my psu isn't of great quality, and itll be upgraded in due time along with many other things ). I'll be playing at 1080p but realise that with a 960, I wont be able to play on ultra high settings... Happy with that. My current card, is Radeon 7850 1gb, so GTX 960 4gb, will be about 40% boost.

Well, I am trying to make it as simple for myself as possible. I've currently got Corsair 200, which I plan to upgrade anyways. So instead of rewiring everything with new psu and then having to do it again when I change the case.

The PSU might not be strong enough to run 960 but fingers crossed it'll.. I do see your point though and it's completely valid and make sense. However, I'm just trying to cut cost down as much as possible, whilst keeping it simple.

It's a minor upgrade but I'll benefit from more vram and new technology. I'm pretty sure a gtx 960 2gb is about 40% better than 7850. So surely with 4gb of vram that would be even better.

no, more Vram done not always mean better if the GPU cant process the data the ram will just sit unused. also at 1080p 4gb is just not needed my gtx780ti uses 1.75gb of Vram playing battlefield hardline @ 1440p

TBF i have just seen the 4gb card on today only offer is cheaper then the 2gb model so you should buy that if your buying today.
if you can budget it get this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/b-gr...-express-graphics-card-gv-n770-bg-348-gi.html its just a much better card.

both card will be ok on your PSU if you not running stress tests all the time. just use your pc for what you need and dont be trying to overclock

That requires 1 8 pin and 1 6pin. Not really going to work with my psu isn't :P. I've only got x1 6/8pin

That psu is not up to running a GTX770. Most reviews show total system power draw to be 350w+ when gaming and without the card overclocked. Don't forget depending on which version he has there is only 336w or 386w on the 12v rail. Couple that with the fact it's a low end budget psu with cheap internals and that's a recipe for disaster.
