Closed Back headphones for work in the office iPhone and oppo HA-2 DAC

So I found the DT770 to be too bassy and it felt bloated. I also found they had a distinct lack of midrange, so basically a lot of bass and top end but nothing much in the middle.

They are very comfortable and as you probably well know, bomb proof and whilst the AKG's are also very well made, they do need a good fit round the ears to get the best sound and therefore are a bit picky with placement.

But for closed back they do sound spacious and I think quite natural, nothing is emphasised. Vocals sound really good.

Agree the Dt 770 is lacking in the mid range.. I fine leatherette to get sweaty though...puts be off the AKG 550 s

if you have a Richer Sounds locally they will likely have a demo pair. Just take your gear in and have a listen. They will offer a 7 day return as well, though if you blag them you may get 30 days, I have in the past.

oh, and if you have a skinny head, don't get them.

Nice Fostex bass, fairly flat from the bass to the upper mids with a sparkly treble. Lively, potent and exciting. It's discontinued now so getting one would be a bit fussy.

The D2000 is superior to the DT770 in every way. I wouldn't travel with them though! Tried that, was very inconvenient. Denon D600 was easier in that regard.

They are clunky, massive sheathed cable, a bit delicate. Travel = taking them portability.

No they are not anywhere near as good as the 650. They are one of my fav closed backs though, The D5000/D7000 being my top two.

£130 is a good deal. I paid the same for mine. I've seen them go for silly money on the famous auction site, just because they rarely pop up for sale.

I have the 2000s, great at stock, amazing once you mod them. I have had the X1/X2, AKG 701s, the denons are way better.

I need a case for them...any recommendations?

Looked at the mods...what mods did you do Raven?

No idea about which case you should consider. Mine stay at home. I wouldn't like to transport them without a case though, so it certainly makes sense to get one if you are going to do that.

Their achilles heel is the screw that connected the cup mount to the headband frame. People have complained that it's not strong enough and can break. No such problem with mine, but I'd imagine less than careful handling could cause it to break. They are certainly not tough like DT770, which I imagine would have no issue being stuffed into a bag, etc.

Then there's the unwieldy cable that Ryan spoke of, which could probably be used a skipping rope. :p

Not modified mine, but I have considered doing it. It's just a question of can I be bothered. :p

Dynamat to pad the cups and some on the back of the driver on the inner circle bit.

Bass tightens right up, mids are less recessed and highs are still great. The denons are unusual for a closed can in that they sound like they are open with a big soundstage, bigger than the X2.

Yes it's quite a good deal. I bought mine on a sale from HMV about 4 years ago for £150 and they used to be between £250-350.

I love biocellulose drivers. I will say if you do mod them, it does tighten everything up which IMHO takes away from the fostex sound. The bass has a bit of a linger which made things actually sound more natural to me as that's how I hear live music. When you mod them, things decay a bit too quickly, everything is much tighter which just makes them sound too moniterish.

If you buy some mahogany cups you can basically turn them into the D5000.

Bass is nice and linear, you will hear that 10k peak but it does give a nice amount of energy. Look how choppy the K550 is then look how linear the Denon is.
