So my trusty, rapidly ageing HD5870 is starting to struggle since the release of Elite: Dangerous: Horizons and XCOM 2, but this doesn't seem like the best time to be throwing a ton of cash at a new card, so I'm looking for something as a stop-gap for the next 9-12 months before I consider a probable complete rebuild.

The budget is £200 and it doesn't seem like there's a great deal of choice at that price point except the R9 380X a la https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapp...rd-with-backplate-11250-01-20g-gx-375-sp.html which admittedly does seem to be a decent chunk of chips for the price.

Is there anything else out there that I've missed for my budget that will give me solid 1080 performance and not embarrass itself at 1440 if I decide to upgrade the monitor ahead of the rest of the system?

I would probably look at the 2nd market and get a 290/290x 4gb, it will be faster the 380X and a bit cheaper.

Definitely the best advice at this point in time.

Good shouts, thanks.

Would need something like a TwinFrozr as space is quite tight. Not planning on pushing the button until payday so plenty time to look around.

ps: Dat TDP tho

There's an article on Toms Hardware today looking at undervolting cards to save power you might be able to able this technique to a 290. Also be sure to get a card with a non reference cooler as the standard AMD cooler makes quiet a racket when underload by all accounts.
