So after a good week passing my CBT last sunday I stayed at a friends last night ready to go home for a ride on the bike today.

Got a knock on the door while I was getting ready to leave and it was a neighbour saying my tyres were flat, I instantly knew what had happened so went to look.

4 stabbed tyres, 6 panels keyed and a scuff mark that looks like someone used sandpaper on the front bumper. Called the police who just gave me a crime number and thats all, Insurance said the car will most likely get written off as its a 2007 C4GP and repairs will cost more than the car with needing a full respray etc.

What should I expect? The car is valued at £5500 on their system but I know they currently sell on autotrader privately for around £3k. I have never had a car written off so don't know what happens next.

Just aswell I got myself a bike last week when I passed or I would be royally screwed with getting to work etc

Man that's a real bummer. Some people are pathetic :/

I've never had a vehicle written off either. Surely best to ask your insurance company for advice?

I imagine they take the vehicle away for inspection, possibly declare a write off, give you their valuation and you lose your no claims bonus. Did you have your no claims protected?

Sorry to hear that, some massive scumbags about, sounds kinda personal though, unless you have an Agreed Valuation for the car, you best bet is to send them 3 adverts of cars similar, year/miles/condition to prove what it is worth

As Krisali says, get some examples in line with your car. You're entitled to be placed into a similar position as before the car was written off. Look on Autotrader for similar cars and you'll likely find that their first offer will be almost insultingly low.

Unfortunatley if you dont have an agreed value policy the "value" you gave them when you took the insurance out means jack mate :(

Thats why they ram "market value" down your throat constantly when you call em

Wife wrote off a car quite a few years ago and as expected insurance company decided to argue its value so we sent them proof of local prices as requested etc

They replied by quoting prices local to them which was over 400miles away and approx £1k difference, so I then told them fair enough you buy it at that price and get it shipped to us in Cornwall as I cannot replace the vehicle for that price locally.

Guess what.......they paid up.

Sorry to hear that some idiot has done that to your car.

With regards to the insurance company if they do write it off then depending on cost it could be a prime opportunity to buy it back for buttons, stick 4 tyres on it and live with the cosmetic damage. You could walk away with a cheque and then just ran the car until it does.

Cheers for the replies, I wasn't in atcham.....you can leave doors unlocked and get no trouble there. I was parked up on a housing estate in telford.

I did speak to the insurance who said they can replace the tyres and I can suck it up and drive round in a scratchmobile or I can let them get the work valued and go from there which for a cost of a full respray they would probably write it off.

Did the police even turn up or just give you a number over the phone and that was it?

What would you expect them to do if they did turn up?

"Ah yes sir, its just as you said on the phone, some ******* has keyed your car and stabbed your tyres."

Unless you were expecting Columbo to turn out and find a minute piece of evidence at the scene that would irrefutably mean that only one man could have done this...

*camera zooms in on Columbo's face*

Dun, dun, DUN!
