Front panel USB device issue

Evening all,

I recently put together a Windows 10 PC for home office use using an Asus A68HM-Plus AMD A68 and a Kolink Satellite Micro-ATX Cube Case.

Every time I attach attach any storage media to either of the two front panel USB ports, I get a USB device not recognized warning (the mouse and keyboard work just fine from them):

"The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"

I have tried the general Google advice of running devmgmt.msc and uninstalling the device, however to no avail. I have even done the traditional 'unplug from the mains and try again' method, as well as a long CMOS reset (for good measure) but still the same issue keeps coming.

Any other suggestions as to what could be wrong?

Hugh

Would it be that the USB ports at the front are not powerful enough for the device you are plugging in?

Have you tried connecting the front panel ports to a different USB header on the motherboard (if possible)? I would also ensure the BIOS is up to date.

I had this not long ago and the only cure I found was to buy a new Motherboard

I swapped a HP Desktop into a new NZXT Case the front 2 USB ports would not work at all the Same error I have since swapped the HP board to a gigabyte Board and the front ports now work so it was either my HP or its bios

Thanks for the suggestions - BIOS is up to date, and whilst there is just one USB 3.0 male on the motherboard, I switched the standard (?) USB cable to another male, and no change.

However, I unplugged the USB 3.0 connector from the male, and now the front panel works flawlessly with USB pens.

So it's certainly a remedy! Any ideas what might be up with the 3.0 then?

Thank you for the info - I really hope it doesn't come to this as I really dislike putting these things together. It's satisfying when it works, but it's moments like this that make it oh so very irritating!
