Jag XF...£11,500...mad idea?

I had a pretty horrible time with an early XF

Id only look for later models personally. Great cars though, but Id assume a risk of issues personally. Check the owners forums too to see the main issues, electrics mainly.

Thanks for the input, some information I am reading says this mainly relates to the early models and mainly the 2.7d range of car. Would one assume that any electrical problems would have already raised their ugly head if anything was going to go wrong?

I know the cars are around 6 years old now so not expecting 100% trouble free motoring, but ideally would like to go into this with as much information as I can.

Yep, just check it all.

Seals go with the age (early than you expect), water ingress into boot where the ECU is
Electrics in general, the screen, tyre monitors and the remote locking system, battery warnings
Wheels get cracked easily, make sure you get no rumbles at speed

I had all that, early car though. Don't assume fixed, they don't appear on day one.

Great car, worth it, but set aside a little pot for repairs if not approved used. No different to any similar exec Id assume

One pretty much guaranteed issue is that the boot loom will need replacing at around 4-5 years old. The wires around the joint break, and you'll end up with some lights not working. Not too expensive, but at the age you're looking for I'd check if it's been done yet.

Another chip in with a positive experience of an XF. I had a 10-plate 3.0d S, bought when nearly 3yrs old, sold around 18 months later.
Fantastic car, had no issues with it apart from a parking sensor fail. Decided to take Jaguar extended warranty on it, due to a couple of possible big bills (e.g.. turbo actuator, boot wiring loom) based on a cautious approach......I found the 20" wheels ride was fine, although they had a fair amount of kerb scratches due to more or less no rim protection from the rubber band tyres.
As others have said, aim for a model with the reversing camera (and front sensors), as it really helps manage the car in tight spaces. Premium Luxury - especially in S models - seems to give a load of kit (mine had ventilated electric sports seats, for example)......oh, and if at all possible, assuming looking at 'classic' version, not facelift, try to get one with Xenons - the majority of the pre-facelift models did not have xenons, and the headlights are poor :(

If it was me buying an XF I would get a facelift, though I guess you can't get one in budget hence the pre-facelift.

The facelift got the updated infotainment system (like what you find in the evoque...so much nicer than the pre-facelift.

Been looking into this a bit more, not sure if sinking £11 - £12k in a car which may look a bit dated too quickly after looking at a facelifted one. Also infotainment is a bit too clunky for my liking.

The engine is a peach but not sure if I can justify the price vs age and may need to put a bit more of a sensible head on.

Had a look at a Passat CC and although it had a 4 cylinder engine the 170bhp went well and in my opinion looks great on the outside and has the fantastic VW infotainment.

Can pick up a 4 year old within budget which is quite tempting.

Apart from this my budget seems a bit odd...too little for a decent age higher quality marque and too much to sink into a ford of Vauxhall in my opinion.

Have you used the touch system? Been looking at XFs as a contender for the 5 series but this is the only thing that overly puts me off; using the laggy touch screen as a daily. MMI and iDrive are so smooth and suited to in-car systems in comparison.

This is what puts me off the XE also. Can't stand touchscreen in cars, I really wish premium manufacturers would stop trying to cram them into cars. Like you have said, MMI and iDrive work really well and are intuitive to use without needing to look down. Touchscreen on the other hand requires looking at, and has no tactile feedback.

Indeed. Also,I wish they would incorporate screens properly into the design of the dashboard as well. So many new cars these days don't look that great interior wise, because it looks like the touchscreen was an afterthought and it is as though they have just awkwardly stuck a small tablet on the centre of the dash.

I have found a few of this particular design can be hard to read if the sun is bright and at a certain angle as they have no enclosure or visor.

I have, I agree in that I prefer the MMI/iDrive style system as you can pretty much learn to operate the system without taking eyes off the road.

The system in the facelift XF is much better than the old prefacelift from what I've heard. Not actually tried sat nav in an XF and only have experience of using the system as a passenger rather than driver as my dad had one for a couple of years.

Awesome interior and somewhat preferred over the F10's....ruined by the fact that its touch screen and miles behind in terms of user experience. A bloody shame!

It would be nice to hear from anyone who uses the Jag system day to day?

@Jono: I agree, Mercedes seem to be the main culprits for this at the moment, the stuck on thighPad look is just ridiculous. At least the 1/2/3/4 series screens are built in....to a degree.

XJ owner here for nearly 3 years now. I have to say the touch screen does feel laggy, but my only point of comparison is PC's and tablets. Never used one in the competition.

In practise I don't need to do much with it though and most things are before even moving off. In rough order:

- Set MY music, not the wife's or children's
- heated seat
- sat nav destination

It is a very minor irritation for me and totally outweighed by all the plusses.

Ive had the prefacelift xf and have now got a bmw with cic I drive so thought id mention some points
-the screen can be a bit laggy but it all depends on how you plan to use the system. the bmw I drive is way better for day to day driving. I tend to mess around with my music quite a lot when driving so found it annoying and distracting for example if I'm playing music to filter to a certain song when you've got a few hundred can take a while as it shows the songs in lists, to go down you have to tap a button which if your driving takes your eyes of the road for too long compared to the bmw which you can scoll easily.
-the dash clock doesn't let you view any music while your on the go. everything has to be done via the touch screen
-sat nav I never really used it much but when I did cant remember there being much issues
-looks wise the prefacelift is getting a bit dated. I did a facelift conversion on mine as found the facelift to look better especially the s model with 20 inch alloys
-comfort wise I and every passenger I had in the back found the seats to be too hard but on the forums people tend to praise it so this might be personal preference.

even though the system was dated i liked the car for its look and once you've got used to the system it weren't too bad but if your doing serious mileage in it you might find it gets annoying

I've owned both a pre and post facelift XF, and the pre facelift system is a bit clunky, it doesn't look great and there's not a whole lot to it. But the facelift system is actually pretty decent, it's responsive and looks the part.

Again, there's not really much to it in terms stuff to play with but what it does, it does well. The sat nav is just a cleaner looking version of the old system but that's no bad thing. I've never had an issue with it, always got me to where I needed to go. Only thing I will say is the live traffic reports are hit and miss and I usually just ignore them.

The pre facelift can't stream music via Bluetooth so keep that in mind if you want to do that.
