Last week I heard a rattle coming from underneath the car, thinking it was either the heat shield or the exhaust had come loose took it to another local garage to get sorted as the one i usually use was closed for some reason.

They later phoned me up saying the front driver side spring had snapped and needed replacing.

Pick car up yesterday everything seemed fine at first rattle had gone, but while getting onto the main road, I noticed the steering was way off & there is some kind of knocking/rubbing sound coming from where they replaced the spring, it actually feels kinda dangerous to drive now.

Going ring the Garage up as soon as it opens but have a feeling they might fob me off saying the car fine, or try to charge me more for other suspension faults that suddenly appear.

Never had dealing like this before so not sure how to go about it.

Politely give them a chance to rectify the issue, and take it from there.

Probably worth saying you are uncomfortable driving the car as it could be dangerous, or cause more damage.

The steering being off is normal after replacing suspension parts etc. You will have to get an alignment done.

Being a little bit off is normal.

Being a lot off is not.

Funny noises are not normal either. It needs looking at.

It is possible the spring has been installed upside-down. It is easily done because there is often no obvious indication as to what the right way up is (You cannot always rely on the writing on the spring)

If the spring has already broken it can be difficult to compare old with new and the differences between the ends can be almost undetectable to the eye.

Plus if only 1 spring has been replaced and it's an older car it can do weird things as the old spring in the other side will sit noticeably lower as they sag with age.

I had a knocking noise after i changed the suspension on my car earlier in the year. Didn't turn up straight away, but ended up being the wheel arch liner not being properly fixed back on one side.
