Currently own a Samsung 2433BW (1920 x 1200, 60hz, 5ms) and a HD7970 Graphics card.

Working away from home I might play single player games on the laptop but at home on my desktop it'll just be online FPS.

I know I need a new GPU to use either G-Sync or FreeSync so will be waiting for the new Pascal\Polaris cards for that.

Going to be doing some gaming this weekend and would love to have a new high hz monitor (going from 60 to 144hz is massive upgrade even without new sync technologies).

These two XL2730Z & S2716DG seem like safe TN options and are about the same price? Should I jump in and pick one of these now, if so which? or wait until the the new cards are out and pick a monitor then?

No one can really answer this question for you.

Do you think that you would be going Nvidia or AMD with the next rounds of cards?

Maybe you should pick your monitor when you pick your card but both these monitors are considered to be very good.

If you pick a monitor now you might be forcing your hand into which card you will need to get to benefit from the variable sync tech.

I have the Benq and I am very satisfied with it. :)

As much as I love using Dell's monitor, I dun really think it make sense to get a TN monitor from Dell tbh..

I would wait till Dell release an IPS or AH-IPS version of their G-sync attempt before buying one.

But I only like the color from IPS, so I'm a bit baised :)

Unlike AMD\Intel, in general I find that the mid\high end cards of AMD and Nvidia are similar price speeds so would pick either and be happy. Think I only went AMD last time as it was better bang for buck (and had more memory)?

Would you still go IPS if you only use the monitor for gaming, specifically online FPS?

Getting a feeling then they are both very good monitors (ones not better than the other) but might be worth waiting for the new cards (in case GREEN\RED has a clearly better card) and monitor tech and QC may have improved?

I'm more of a leisure gamer than a competitive one, so the color reproduction and impressiveness is a lot more important for me than response time, so yes personally I would go IPS.

But that said, I am those guys who never really care about 60Hz vs 144Hz so you might want to take that into account too.

For me it has to be higher hz and considering the current tn panels, you don't lose out too much in color.

Both those monitors have 8 bit panels and the Benq is great.

I also have a Samsung PLS display which has a 5ms response time and low input lag and while it looks better in general, it can't match the speed of the tn.

The difference is like enabling and disabling motion blur and I dislike motion blur.

Well of course it can't, you're comparing 60Hz to 144Hz. :p
