I'm going to New Zealand again next January but would like to break our flights up again.

We went to Sydney and Dubai in January to break them up last time and as much as i enjoyed Dubai (and never saw half of it in the 3 nights we were there), i fancy somewhere different. We are looking at about a week after 3 weeks in NZ, but this time i'd rather spend a week in one place rather than do 3 nights in one place and 3 nights in another like last time. So, where would you go for a week on the way back from NZ?

So far i'm thinking Singapore or Phuket, HK or Vietnam, i'd like Japan but it's a bit far out. Any other suggestions? Sri Lanka maybe?

Singapore is an incredible city (and is a cheap stop off if flying Singapore Airlines). We did all the tourist stuff in 4 days including trips out to the theme park, zoo etc.

The climate however, well that doesn't agree with me :(

Plenty to do in Hong Kong, much more interesting that Sing which is a bit sterile if you ask me. Take the train to Guanzhou and see a bit of real China, cool place. Or if you're feeling adventurous you could take the sleeper train to Shanghai (22 hours) and fly back from there.

Hanoi would be nice too, an hour from HK, and you can take a night or two in a boat on Ha Long bay. Loads of stuff.

Los Angeles. Fly Air New Zealand NZ1/NZ2 return from London to Auckland, it stops over at LA to refuel and you can do a stopover there.

Then rent a car and head over to Vegas, or wherever.

We did a trip to Aus/NZ over Christmas and stopped over in Singapore on the way there and back. The way out was only 4hrs at the airport but the way back we had 4 days. Utterly loved the place and big thanks to whoever on here suggested staying at the Pan Pacific hotel. Beautiful place.

If you're in any way into your food then Singapore is awesome. We only ate in a restaurant once and it was the worst meal we had whilst out there (and cost a lot!). We ate in the hawker markets all the time where a meal costs about £2.50. Going to all the different ones in Chinatown, Little India etc was great fun. There's one called Lau Pa Sat where they shut down a whole road every evening and there's a gazillion satay stalls. Awesome.

The botanical gardens were lovely too, and it's so easy to get around on the metro.

EDIT: I have also stopped over in Hong Kong and would also thoroughly recommend it!
EDIT2: Totally misread the OP and didn't realise he wanted a whole week. That might be a bit long for Singapore/HK :p I'd look at Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam etc.

That's an interesting thought, however I think LA is awful but San Fran is nice.

If you're going the otherway, Singapore or Malaysia are lovely and worth visiting, however from what I've heard from others Vietnam is also very much on my "to do" list.

Another vote for Singapore. Its fantastic. Its a great easy introduction into Asia. The transport network (MRT) is also great.

So much to do and see (Sentosa is a tourist haven). Incredibly clean (unless you go to Little India), and a great night life.

You would also have the option of popping across the border (literally 5 minutes on the Woodland train) to get to Malaysia and then go to KL.

Tokyo is also good fun, but it can be tourist unfriendly unless you stick to a few districts.

Personally I dont enjoy Sri Lanka.

The bottom of the Atlantic is great at this time of year and often free :D

Another vote for Singapore from me.

LA is indeed awful but has a large rental car facility and a network of freeways to quickly get you out of LA and into places that are absolutely the complete opposite of awful.

For this plan not to be a complete nuisance and to work nicely your stopover point needs to be a location with an airport that has direct flights to both London and Auckland.

That pretty much limits you to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok ,Hong Kong and a couple of the Chinese cities.

Otherwise you are into the realms of it being a more complexly ticketed itinerary rather than a simple stopover and it'll get expensive and irritating involving changes of planes etc.

Fair comment and agreed. :)

True and LA works well for that but SF is soooo much better! :D

Wow didn't realise how little options there were - still there's a cool list of cities to check out from there. :)

Agreed.

I like LA. You just need to know where to go. In other words, stay away from Hollywood :p

Nah, LA is good for about 24hrs that's it IMO - it's just a nasty sprawl of concrete with no redeeming features, again that's just my opinon. :)

Apart from all the beaches?

Santa Monica is lovely, Marina Del Ray is lovely, Venice Beach is fun. But yes, I agree that you probably don't want to spend much more than a few days as a tourist there. Once you've seen Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills etc there's not a huge amount to do. There are the theme parks though which might suit some people.

Don't get me wrong I would choose Singapore or Hong Kong as a stopover, any day!
