A good friend is in the pits and is turning to booze following a divorce and various other incidents which have hit him quite hard. My wife says he needs to get life insurance because the way he's going his kids are going to be fatherless before the end of the year, something we're all trying to avoid. He's been to the doctor and she advised him to go on anti-booze, my wife reckons he needs to stay away because if that's on his medical record then no life insurance company will touch him or will price him out of house & home.

We've also recommended anti-depressants but being the stubborn type he is, he's refusing this, but said he will take anti-booze.

Can this stuff be omitted from his medical records? If not, can life insurance companies access this info?

Ta :)

Life insurers often want a medical or at least something from your GP .... so he's going to need to pull himself together or pay some eye-watering loading on the premiums.

I would have thought that now he's seen the GP about it, it will be on his record regardless of whether he takes the medication or not?

Sorry, but if you genuinely believe he may top himself before the end of the year, then making sure there's money for the kids should be the least of your worries. Spend your time helping him instead!

His doctor will have written his condition on his records. Many insurers ask for permission to see medical records.

And more importantly this, money will not replace a parent.

We're doing everything we can, trust me. It's not a cut & dry situation, there are loads of people pulling together for him.

Someone suggested getting anti-depressants and putting them in an anti-booze bottle. Seems a bit shady but desperate times and all that.

Don't do this, you've got no idea which anti depressants will actually work for him and a Dr would never agree to it.

Also anti-depressants are known to increase depression in the very beginning, which if he's as close to the edge as you say may just push him over...
