Potentially need a new car

£200 a tyre? Are you buying a new alloy with each tyre or something?

In a 255:30:19 size (standard on E89 Z4 for example) some premium tyres are around £200 each fully fitted.

Though I did see F1A2's in that size for £165 fully fitted.

That said, its still a lot!

Yeah, but I don't think that's the case for his Z4... :p Even on the largest 18 inch option you can get Conti Sport 5's fitted for £91 a corner. I have the same size and purchased 4 RainSport 3's for under £300.

Its not just fuel savings, You forget Tax £295 Z4 - Example Vrs £130, Servicing I dare say the fabia will be cheaper again and tyres i'm running 19 inch on the Z4 and we're looking in the £200s a tyre for that.

Its high maintenance cost, I honestly can't fault the MPG figures on the Z4, for a high powered roadster 30+Mpg is bloody good going. Its the rest of it that I never thought about when purchasing it.

If I can sell the car for what I bought it for - £4800 technically I haven't lost that much money if you factor in the interest I have to pay for the car, dw I went with a bank loan so interest is not much more.

I was under the impression that this was a z4 costing the earth in finance each month; you might be better off keeping it.

Things like tyres/tax are effectively one offs - it actually costs more to change cars in an attempt to avoid them.

Diesel is only marginally cheaper, not enough to justify the switch imo; be mindful of the fabia though, as you could be jumping out of the fire and into the frying pan if you end up with a **** one and the z4 might not be so bad after all.

No you're not. Far less than that.

Are you even sure they are 19 inch? No E85 Z4 was ever offered with 19 inch wheels - 18's were the largest.

265/30/19

It's what came with the car, CSL look a likes, sets the car off nicely.

Off the advert for the car

So the issue is the massive fake ebay rims take expensive tyres not the Z4 specifically then.

You're a very harsh person Fox.

Understandably the wheels can be changed for small wheels such as the MV2s which are bit more affordable at less than £100 a tyre.

I'm just trying to save money and my mindset is big engine two seater roadster will occur bigger costs than a small car would and thought it would be a sensible idea to downgrade to help to give me better living and actually have money to spend on myself and enjoy.

At the minute all my money is pretty much going to getting to work, paying off car, repairing silly niggly things that's already happened with the 7 months of owning the car, bills eventually general maintance and compulsory things that I have to pay for to let me drive the car on the road, and not very much to actually enjoy myself with.

That £250/m payment for the car could be much happier sat in my back pocket

The potential £150 extra I would spend on tax could be much happier sat in my back pocket

The potential £100-150 extra I would spend on per tyres could be much happier sat in my back pocket.

I've almost paid half the car off, so the money I'd have left over after paying the rest of the loan will go into purchasing a more efficient car such as a Fabia that seem to go between 2-3k, I wouldn't have to worry about paying said monthly loan, and big prices for tax and tyres every year.

That's my mindset anyway but you all seem to think its not worth the while and keep the car.

Fox is just jealous of your superior 3.0 petrol sports car shaped BMW. ;)

And maybe a bit offended that you dare deface a BMW with non-genuine parts! :D

Haha I doubt he's jealous, He has the newer style 5 series?

The car was bought with all that stuff, least the facelift bumper on an 04 car is genuine :D

It may be non genuine but it sets the car off, it looks stunning imo, I love it.

Bonnet and front bumper don't quite line up, and the colour match isn't quite right... But if those two issues were fixed, it would be a big improvement over standard. :p

My point here is that some of this isn't because of the car.

As far as BMW's go the Z4 isn't a particularly expensive one to run. It takes reasonably priced tyres (if you dont have wheels that are too big for it), it's very light so despite it's 3 litre engine it'll touch 40mpg on a Motorway run, etc etc.

It shouldn't break the bank to run an 11 year old Z4 as a daily car provided nothing has been going wrong with it - general consumables are reasonably cheap and most places understand how to work on them as the E46 on which it is based has been around for almost 20 years.

You are paying £250 a month for a £4500 Z4?! This is the problem - you are finding motoring expensive not because of the car but because you are servicing a £250 a month loan on a £4500 car. This isn't going to change just because you swap the Z4 for a £4500 Focus.
