Running 2 pc's at home, one for work and a new build for gaming. Both are currently running win7 64. Both have the Windows 10 free upgrade icon ready and waiting in the task bar, and I keep getting e reminder to do it.

I'm not doing either yet for various reasons, but I've noticed that there have been no windows updates for either machine for the last few months. Is this because of the massive Windows 10 'update' sat there waiting, or is it another ploy to force Windows 10 on everyone as soon as possible?

No.

MS only turned off their long term support for XP (although will still roll out major security updates if required for the time being) last year.

W7 will be a supported OS for many more years yet.

I had another look, and there's an option there under the big "upgrade to windows 10" box saying "show all available updates" in tiny text. I had simply overlooked it, so glad that's sorted.

I have the check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install option and normally get an icon in the taskbar informing me. But on one pc I have nothing, not even the windows 10 icon, and on the other only the windows 10 icon (no general updates icon) so it's all a bit flaky.

Pretty much. There have been loads of threads about this recently and the current conspiracy is that they're making windows 7 updates very slow/not run on purpose.

Well I can testify to that. I had a nightmare installing Windows 7 on my new gaming rig a few months back. After installing the os as usual I went to do all the usual updates, and it just hung for ages time after time. I thought something was wrong and I kept wiping and reinstalling from scratch.

Must have done this about 10 times, and then after a bit of research read about this new slow conspiracy. I had to leave it checking for updates for about 3 hours before it would pick them up, and then leave it overnight to download. Was a right pain in the arris.

Yeah pretty much the same here. Whether its deliberate/insert conspiracy theory of your choice here/ or not its certainly painfully slow.

I'm on windows 8.1 and had to fire up IE earlier...

Bugger off... :p

Win 7 updates are slow because:

1: The update program has way too many calculations to make now due to the number of updates. So it takes a lot longer to calculate what updates you have already installed vs you need.
2: MS are obviously pushing Win 10 so are not doing enough to fix this. They have released a few patches which update the Windows Update software but its still slow.

Be careful with the forced Win 10 upgrades as well hiding as something else :(

WinXP still gets updates if you happen to have the EPOS version - a simple registry tweak. It's not ideal but it still works.

Win7 has been very slow to update on new installs for me lately, it took hours and was left overnight.

There is a way you can "fix" the issue with updates for 7 on a clean install.

1. Disconnect from internet

2. Restart PC

3. Manually run 1st install (KB3102810)

4. Restart PC

5. Run 2nd install (System update readiness tool)

6. Restart PC

7. Connect to internet

8. Check for Windows Updates

9. Done!

Has worked for me on several machines :)
