Well,

I am trying to replace the drum bearings in an old Hotpoint.

I cannot get the old bearings out! I have been walloping them with a 4Kg sledge and they simply will not move!

If I hit them any harder I fear I will damage the plastic bearing housing/drum. Similarly I cannot use heat!

Is this job actually possible???

Or should I just give up now and just buy another machine (Something that all my Girls say I should do!)??

Its is possible normally just hit a cold chisel with a hammer working around the edge of the bearing slowly moving it all forward until it pops out.

depending on what machine you have you could just replace the whole rear tub but would cost more

When I did mine, I just resorted to smashing the old one out rather than trying to get it out intact. Break the middle of the bearing off fist but make sure you don't get grease everywhere. And be careful you don't damage the lip or edge where the bearing sits.

Good to use a bearing lock product when you put the new bearing in.

They've likely been machine pressed in without any care of replacement in the future.

Are the bearings attached to the drum? If so, can you replace the bearing/drum assembly?

Angle grinder will get it out.

Angle grinder gets anything out.

Angle grinder don't give a *&^$£*£*

(* by which I mean would it be possible to cut it out bit-by-bit with a dremel and metal cutting disk)

Are you planning on changing the drum as well as the bearings and all the bearing seals?

No, just the bearings, seals and spider of course!

Thought I should say how I solved it.

Fortunately I had some large blocks of wood available that allowed me to support the bearing directly inside the casing and this allowed me to whack the old bearing out

(But it still took far more force than the youtube vids on this job would suggest!)

Supporting the target, holding the "Punch" and wielding the 8Lb sledge all at the same time is a bit tricky! :p

Anybody wanting to do this at home might find having a friend available helpful!

we have threaded pullers never used them though as we change tub rear complete, price wise there was about £5 in it versus bearing kit.
