North Wales Police deliberately mow down dog

Whenever people use the term 'destroyed' when talking about killing an animal, I always imagine them blowing it up and then dusting off their hands. :p

I think as lot of people are missing a vital detail. This was not a domesticated pet dog it was a hunt hound.

This makes two big changes, one the animal (which had already bitten an officer) was likely to but significantly more dangerous then a pet.

The other is that hunt hounds often don't get to live to the end of their natural lives. A hound will often be put down if it gets ill or injured or just too old to hunt. And in believe in this case the hounds owners had given permission for the animal to be destroyed.

The owner did, but after the fact.

I suspect most of the outcry is down to people feeling a bit squeamish about the somewhat grisly way it was done.

If a car had accidentally hit the dog and flattened it while running loose, no story.

If the police had shot or stunned the dog, no story.

As noted, dynamic assessment made and, while not elegant or pleasant, incident resolved.

With regard to swerving, I hit a pheasant on the M4 several years ago, after it waddled out into the inside lane at point blank range. Something stopped me from instinctively swerving, maybe it was recalling from years earlier what a driving instructor told me while learning, "If you swerve at that speed (40 MPH) you will roll the car over."

Took out the front number-plate though, the radiator was covered in feathers and red mush and for about a month after once the engine and exhaust got warm, all you could smell was burnt bird and feathers.

I don't think you would roll at 40MPH unless you are in a vehicle with a high centre of mavity, bad or no stability control, and you counter the swerve very aggressively.
Watch some 'moose test' videos on YouTube.

Example of a good result:

I had to fetch a pheasant out of an elderly couples grille early one sunday morning when I used to work in a petrol station, was both hilarious and grim. Hilarious in the fact that it had got caught so it looked like some kind of rolls royce winged angel mascot, grim that when i had to remove it only half of it came out and split in the middle.

Back on topic, I see no issue with this whatsoever. They made a judgement call and the result is no motorists have been injured by the thing they were trying to prevent. They tried other methods before hand and were unsuccessful, including one of the officers being bitten which would prevent another attempt in my eyes.

Short of arming police routinely what do people expect? Shut a motorway for an hour until an ARU can attend, taking them away from a duty they are already doing? It's a dog not a person for gods sake.

I'm sure if the dog had caused an incident and children were killed people would have been moaning about something not beng done by the Police.

Just to add to this vehicle width/wheel track also plays a part in roll-over stability.

Then someone turns around to them and shouts "You're only supposed to blow the bloody paws off!"

As for swerving etc, well I think that people have almost no input, instincts take over.. I doubt someone would roll due to just the sudden change in direction, but if that takes their car off the tarmac, I can imagine things getting pear shaped rather quickly..

I've seen it before - slight hill, rav4 type jeep thing - revved it a little and went right over at 10-15mph going up Percy road here:

Ended up on its roof pretty much where the stop writing is on the road. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it mind.

o.O

4x4 going 15mph in a straight line albeit up a slight gradient rolls?

Surely if anyones take these things off the road we would be hearing about accidents left right and centre? :p

Going at 15mph wouldn't generate enough momentum to get it onto it's roof?

Seriously happened - I have no idea how - I was walking home from school about where that spot is on street view around 1994-1995 - he slowed down at the junction, revved it a bit as he started up Percy road and next moment upside down on the other side of the road.

(He claimed he slipped on oil but I never saw any on the road).
