Hi all,

I'm finally changing the old i5 2500k.

Are these components ok for you? I'm particularly wondering about the DDR4 memory.

i7 6700k
Corsair Hydro H100i (or should I go for the newer model?)
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 (or shall I stay with Corsair?)
Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x8) DDR4 PC4-19200 2400mhz (any advantage in going for quad memory: Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-21300C16 2666MHz?)
Corsair Carbide Air 540

Thanks for reading, any suggestion is welcome.

Have you considered X99+5820K?

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £571.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

This platform can use quad channel RAM, Skylake is dual channel RAM, but a quad RAM kit will work, but will just be two sticks per channel.

I love the idea of a 6 cores CPU, but the frequency seems a bit behind - isn't that what will matter the most in the end? (for gaming, I mean)

Good to know about Skylake being only dual channel (what on earth are they thinking?)

It is behind, but it can also be increased upwards very easily to 4Ghz or greater (depends on the cooling/CPU/how far you want to go pushing it).

There are also two excellent alternatives to the case+cooler,

If you are just gaming then 8Gb is all you need and there is a Skylake board with free RAM - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...therboard-with-free-8gb-memory-mb-546-gi.html

well, yes and no. Depends what you want to do. And also keeping in mind how the new graphics APIs take better advantage of multicore processors.

It's worth a look around before making a decision. I went Skylake because I'm more comfortable with that kind of system (coming from a 2700K). With a bit more thought, I might have gone for X99.

Skylake is a bit faster than the 5820k, but when overclocked the latter is still very powerful for gaming. I recently moved from a 4790k @4.7ghz, (which is equivalent to a 4.5ghz 6700k) to a 5820k @4.5ghz. Gaming performance is very similar. Also the extra cores on X99 could be more beneficial with newer games using DX12.

RAM speed doesnt make the biggest impact and going over 3000Mhz is wasting money unless you like benchmarking or running SuperPI etc.

The cheapest quad channel 2400Mhz kit is here - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...l-kit-black-tpkd416gm2400hc16q-my-058-tg.html

The Kingston I picked because A) they look nice, B) Kingston is nice stuff, C) because of the water cooler the tall heatspreaders wont be an issue.

Faster ram doesn't make much difference in games tbh. In the 4790k setup there was virtually zero difference when gaming if I ran my ram at default of 1333mhz or on its XMP profile of 2400mhz.

Good to know, thanks.

For the brand, I'm trying to stick with Corsair, apart from the PSU. Just so I can speak to one person only if anything starts acting funny.

The evga g2 units are rebadge superflower oem psu's. A very high quality brand with an excellent reputation. Evga offer a much longer warranty too. 650w should be plenty fir one graphics card and enough headroom when overclocking.

I have a 970 gtx, but planning to get a 980ti. Later, maybe a second 980ti, but that's unlikely.

Two 980ti, 850W PSU, Gold with decent brand (Seasonic, EVGA, SuperFlower, or Enermax if you feel a bit adventurous). more money of course. Depends on what you wanna do when Pascal comes out.

And then maybe you could score a good second hand 980ti, and DX12 should make dual GPUs a better option that it currently is (i.e. old crappy engines that don't work with SLI, like Fallout 4). Pascal ain't gonna be cheap, but plenty upgrading their 'old' 980ti.

I'm always weary of dual GPUs. Did that once, was more trouble than worth.

I went for a skylake 6700k for gaming purposes..
and i wanted to have the later chip /board
from personal experience the skylake chip over clocks well and very easily
at a pretty low voltage i am running at 4.6ghz and i also have the H100i with 240 mm fans and my CPU temps are approx 20.21.23.24. under load in the mid 30's to low 40's
i also have a 980TI the HOF edition and it i is not overclocked
all my games like gta v cod3 ,fallout 4 etc all run at 100fps
and that is with a monitor pushing 3440x1440 resolution
so if you want a gaming pc and something that is easy to overclock even for
someone with little overclocking experience
i would recommend the skylake cpu
and also they say it is performes better with dx12 games which we are yet to see.
from a personal point of view i am really happy with my build
and i can do anything i need to with my pc and i dont suffer slow down issues.
the x99 chips have more cores
but end of the day its older tech.
i would also recommend the higher ram just due to the fact depending on your motherboard choice the ram timings and type of ram may come into the equation.
i went for 3000mhz 16gig corsair dominator plat. and it works great in my system

What cpu / speed were you using before and did you notice much difference or did you also upgrade your gpu to the 980ti at the same time ?

I would recommend a nice set of RAM here, DDR4 is still early doors and the 2133 and 2400 mhz sticks are a bit lacking, if you could find a 2600 CL 11 for a reasonable price, it may be worth it.
